Some people are capable of doing some work. It all depends on one's ability. If you're not, don't do it. But if it's something you're able to do to keep you running why wouldn't you? Even if your mechanical work is "for free" it can end up making you money when you would have sit. If you're not mechanically inclined and have no idea what you're doing and it's a concern for possible safety by all means sit and wait for it to be fixed by a trained professional. I know a couple of drivers that have mechanical backgrounds. One was even a diesel mechanic. Before becoming a driver. It is situational though. Sitting isn't always the answer simply because you don't get paid for it.

That is what's wrong, the newbreed mentally of it's not my job yet these young drivers don't realize that it is part of there job to keep there truck in the best shape possible. I know with the Mega's it would not work but with smaller companies the drivers should be certified to adjust brakes. The more level 1 inspection's you can pass the better.

They should pay hourly if they expect driver to work company truck. Per mile means my job is to drive the truck. I own my truck but i still fix company trailer instead of wasting time in some truck shop.

Why would I want to sit and wait at a t/a for 3 hours while I can do it myself less than a hour and make more money letting the tires roll.

You are encourage companies by given free labor, next they expect you to be mechanic doing brake change and doing other things.

Its something simple. Like changing a light bulb or topping off coolant.

Why would you wait in line and ask a mechanic to do it and lose money?
Breakdown pay is like $15/hr, why would I wanna make 15 while I can make $33/hr driving down the road?

    Mudguppy and NavigatorWife Thank this.

Please don't adjust the trailer brakes on a company trailer, because you don't know what you're doing and after you're done and I get that trailer, the brakes are always too tight,

Geez. This whole humongous thread mostly dedicated to making the OP out to be an unsafe driver with "out of adjustment" brakes and wanting OP to perform work that
    1. Is not the issue at hand
    2. Is not qualified to do
    SMH. Blind leading the blind.
