Would you borrow money and open a pizza parlor or nail salon or auto body repair shop or a bookstore , or a gas station ?
Without ever working in one to learn the business and how to operate it profitably ?
this is the same .
Work for someone else and learn the business and how to make a profit in the business before you go into debt with no working knowledge of the business .MadScientist, Trucker61016, JoeyJunk and 2 others Thank this. -

I somehow stumbled upon an expediting public Facebook page last week. Non stop people asking how to get in. You could tell they just got off the boat and heard about the good times lol.

So you have no clue about the industry but you're buying a truck ?? Then get offended when some offers you the reality of what you're about to do???

I considered looking at being owner/operator a while back but decided to stay a company driver because of business climate-and I’ve been driving for 7 1/2 years now.
Even before new/used equipment prices went through the roof(and of course the pandemic) the writing was on the wall. You hear about these people saying to get your own authority, but what they fail to mention is the OPERATING AND STARTUP COSTS involved. That includes getting your DOT number, looking for equipment obviously, getting registration,IFTA,insurance, etc. And of course fuel costs are astronomical right now. And then there are other things to consider, like finding a place to park your equipment, especially if you live in an area that prohibits truck parking at your residence. So you have to consider spending money on parking, storage etc. By that time, you’ve probably already spent thousands of dollars and you haven’t even gotten your first load yet. These are things to consider when going the route of owner/operator. Also, We also have to factor in paying taxes to Uncle Sam.
You might want to get a couple of years of driving under your belt as others have mentioned before diving headlong in going owner/operator. A lot of lease/purchase and owner/operators alike have learned that lesson the hard way,too little too late.Last edited: Apr 15, 2022
