Kansas likes to use portables on the routes from the meat plants, that many drivers use to get around the coups...

Colorado uses a portable on 287 just south of Limon, to catch the trucks that went thru town...

I never worried about crossing them...

A portable scale is enough to get you a ticket, and the attitude that it is not accurate, will probably get you an inspection and a out of service.

Wait, I take that back, when I pulled railroad pigs out of Chicago in the '90's, many times I'd see portables on the city streets, as they knew railroad trailers were always loaded heavy. "It's just going on the train, right?". Again, CB radio was alive with info about them, and we'd just go a different way out of the yards.

Well, the troopers in Motor Carrier have been on a downward quality spiral since the late 90s, they have never been known for liking or being particularly good at their jobs, sometimes they are sent their because their post commander can't stand them( wrecking cars, complaints). Also are scales are roughly 5 years old.

I learned that, when a motor carrier compliance guy needed backup. An irate trucker wanted to be weighed again using a different scale, so we followed him to a truck stop and the CAT scale clocked him at almost 3k lbs less, twice.

Little harsh. Definitely made it sound worse than it was. I picked up the same load a little while ago and hit the cat scale that was 4 miles in the opposite direction. I was just trying to add some intense drama to the story. Sheesh, lighten up man. Here's the real story:

I saw a portable scale yesterday..... And I drove on it..... Yeah....

Several years ago I came up on a flatbed hauling bee hives on a secondary road in Colorado. He was going slow and just as I found a place to pass I saw a sign for a portable scale that had been set up. So I pulled back in behind the flatbed. The flatbed hauling beehives actually pulled into the portable scale. All of the sudden I see about 8 DOT officers running for their van. They jumped into the van and closed all the windows and one DOT cop was sitting at the window waving his hands for the driver to go. Oviously I got a wave across, also. I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face and could bearly see the road for about 10 minutes. I just kept seeing those DOT cops scattering and running to the van.
