my statement was more explain the reason why they say to not use the power divider on snow and ice. to say never use the power divider on snow and ice is as bad of advice as to say to always use the power divider on snow and ice.

Let's see the upper Midwest and Canadian tundra or the mid Atlantic ......
I think that sums it up.Hammer166 Thanks this. -
not4hire, I've fought the battle you're fighting many times on here. And it's always the same... those who think they know, refuse to listen to those who actually do know and can explain why. And sadly, it's those who 'think they know' who are far more likely to bloviate about it and spread misinformation amongst the noobs and other impressionable sorts. No wonder trucking is such a mess, huh?
But thanks for fighting the fight, as futile as it seems sometimes.not4hire, Licensed to kill and Lepton1 Thank this. -
Locked differentials while driving on ice: Two points are important to keep in focus, 1), the tractors pivot point is changed, 2), additionally causing a greater amount of force focused to the ground. i.e. this may work to get the combination vehicle unstuck. However, those same greater forces used by combination vehicle may cause an accident.
How: Under Steer, By changing the trucks pivot point, widens the turning radius (2 axles engaged Vs. 1 axle engaged) during the moment of a loss of traction. i.e. to counter steer, the driver needs to respond sooner/quicker to counter the greater forces applied by the two engaged powered axles that changed the tractors pivot point or face a loss of control. (to unlock the differential, will shorten the trucks turning radius.)
(im pretty sure, i got it right)Last edited: Feb 28, 2015

SMDH I have learned nothing from this thread except truckers never agree. Everyone has different opinions. I guess I will just drive really really slow then in bad weather. Agreed?
