    Hi all,

I've been lurking on this board for quite some time and finally am ready to go OTR and pick a company. I've applied to several, but I need to be trained through a company as I cannot afford to be out weeks of pay through a school as I'm currently paycheck to paycheck.

I've talked to a few recruiters now and some have been honest and some sound like they are giving me a sales pitch. I come from sales so I know when I'm being sold to. I know there are probably other threads but with the new covid normal I figured I'd ask again.

What are the best companies out of the ones I listed or otherwise that will train you?

What is the best starting company for pay? I'm 23 and have no family, home time is not a consideration. I hope to take hometime which I understand is a 72 hour reset in random cities.

Do any of these companies have driver facing cams? Dash cam is a must but I will immediately not consider a driver cam. I don't like employee facing security cameras and my sentiment extends to this, amply so because you basically live in the truck. I've spent the last two years paranoid about my driving and have a pristine record so I can get a good job. Let me know so I can scratch them off my list.

What's the best one for company culture? I've heard horror stories of dispatchers screwing drivers with loads and such, I'm not a dick to my coworkers or bosses so I doubt that'll be a problem, but I don't want to be stuck with "The bad company".

What is the best starting company for driver comfort? I've heard stories where they will be on your ##* about running the AC in hot summers, and general nonsense like that, I couldn't take that.

Any info appreciated. I look forward to being on the road!

From what's been posted on here, if you choose Wilson, tell whoever there, you want 48 states.
Probably make more money than being stuck on Western11.

Thank you. They don't do driver facing cameras, do they?

That's ok, I believe they don't based on what I can find but when I find out for certain I'll update with that info. I appreciate the response! :)

I agree, Wilson from experience. They DO NOT have driver facing cameras and have great equipment. If you want to run all 48 you will pull Prime trailers. Running the Northwest 10 you will pull dry van. They also have I-5 dedicated out of Portland. I received my training from them, then ran the NW10 for about 14 months before moving on to O/O.

Wilson has been debated in several places as joined with Prime. In fact the two owners are good friends and I would not doubt it if Prime helps Wilson with financing his major purchases as that is the way most companies work. Even Americas last tool company Milwaukee, is owned by a Canadian Holding Company that is owned by a Japan Holding Company. Once you get into the real big money, it all blends together.

Which company will fit you best is only something your heart can say. I thought CFI with "You are the Captain of your ship" motto was for me. Safety was big, support was supposed to be big and they had an open door policy with the Big Guy. Still, when your dispatcher sends you somewhere or your fleet manager tells you to do something if you don't, they control where you go and how many miles you will get. Once the fight starts, in the end the driver loses. I was stuck in N Dakota with few loads getting me anywhere close to home days from my scheduled home time. The FM just canceled my home time and I could not do anything about it. I am old and fight differently. I found out my truck was supposed to be at auction soon and side doored my way back to Joplin and turned in my keys . They asked why as I was getting a brand new truck? For me it was not the truck nor the miles. It was the fighting I did not want and the constant risk they put my CDL in.

Pick a company you can talk with and work with. Forget the name on the side or how many loads they can give you. If one dispatcher dislikes you it is no good. For me I would go for a walk at dispatch and meet the folks on the weekend sending loads. Listen to the gossip and banter to see if these are the people you can work with. That is how I got my newest job. I am the dispatcher. I arrange when and where I go. They sell too much over the good weather months that I do not have to worry about mileage. What I lose in winter I double the other 9 months. They also pay 2 directions even when empty. All I have to do is stay clean and not hit anything. At my age this is easy.

Wilson was my first choice list. They turned me down. Prime was on the bottom of the list as they were looking mostly for teams at the time. Schneider was near Prime but their trucks for good drivers were well equipped. The biggest problem I had with all of them was dispatch stories.. It only takes a day at a truck stop and talking with a few at the pumps to see every company has problems there. Find the one you can work with and do not be afraid of transferring until you find a good one. I paid for my school so I could leave earlier. I am glad I did. No contract no commitment. The trucker world works very well like that. Trust me they will drop you in a heart beat if there is the slightest safety concern.
