Question about registration after terminating lease

I have a question for experience o/o's. For the first time ever, I own a truck and have the title. I'm about to switch carriers but I'm registered and licensed with my currenct carrier. Once I terminate my lease with my current carrier, I won't be registered or have an operating number. I currently park on my current carriers property and once I separate I'll have to leave. My next carrier will register my truck and I'll be operating under their authority but that will be in another state. They will not begin the licensing process until I'm completely separated from my current carrier. I'll be in limbo for a few days. Can I drive it locally to a parking location while I wait on my new carrier information which I assume they'll mail me once I terminate my current authority?

Get a temp registration thru your state

 

Thanks bureaucracy always confuses me. There's mc numbers, ifta, registration, and I'm not sure what's needed for what. I've seen trucks driving around with not for hire taped to the side of the truck. If the title is all that's needed for a temp registration I'll be good to go.

What you do is park it where you going to leave it until you get the new numbers from new carrier. Don't tell current carrier. Then remove all current carriers numbers and license plate and bring it to them.

 

Each state is different in what they allow. Most have "hunters permits" available, which are a temporary apportioned registration used by owner operators to "hunt" for work, meaning drive the truck while between leases with carriers. This is the most legal way to move your truck while not leased to a carrier although getting temporary insurance is tough as most non-trucking (bobtail) policies don't cover your truck when not leased to a carrier as they are only excess insurance.

 

This is why I recommend getting your own tag and just listing your new carrier as responsible for safety. Get your own tag, ifta and credentials for NM, KY, OR, NY and CT or just the states you’ll be running.

 

I don't get owners who depend on the company to get the plate, they are screwing themselves when something like this happens.

 

I’ve never had my own plate. Most places don’t change their percentage if you lease on with your own plate so I’m fine letting them take care of everything because I’m basically paying them to do it anyway. It’s not that hard to get a permit to move your truck, I looked for fun just now and a 10 day permit in MN is a whole $5. Anyway, been with 2 carriers since 2019 and one carrier from 2012 to 2016 and never felt I’ve screwed myself because it’s pretty easy to handle what needs handled if you quit away from home. But I also do a lot of things that the experts here say is wrong so it’s no big deal.
