Why is the 5th wheel release on the passenger side on Sterling's? Are there any other trucks like that? Seems kinda stupid.

    Cardfan89 Thanks this.

Sounds like some nanny company’s idiot specs, like Swift wanting the landing gear on the passenger side of the trailer.

“But, but.... then they’d never walk around the trailer”.

I think it's all of them? The ones at ups were the same way.

It's the way they are spec'd.

I have to admit one time while temping, i get this truck and i go to unhook and What the??????
look all around, look inside for a 5th wheel release button (never seen one, but i hear they exist) and nothing. Finally had to go inside.
"oh it's on the other side"
Well fudge, now i look stupid. :/

I read some company spec'd them all that way (it was doubles for deliveries) so the driver would be out of traffic when pulling the pin. they had the landing gear handle on that side too. Dunno how true that is.

I just came back and checked out every one of our Sterlings. All the fifth wheel release handles are on the driver's side on ours.

Maybe it's cause we are running older trucks or maybe they were refitted with new fifth wheels. The only reasonable explanation I can think of to have everything like landing gear crank backwards is cause it would be safer to do a trailer drop on the side of the road if you break down.

Come to think of it since my buddy at Reddaway is sending me pics of snow, I only ever chained my passenger side drive tire with a single rail chain. Took me only five minutes to get her nice and tight and I rarely had to bite the bullet and get the other side. I was lazy but also safe I guess.

We get that sometimes as well.
HERE, it depends on what freight lanes get unloaded first.

i don’t think so. my relay was waiting on me. the trailer they loaded was for a truck coming down from toledo with a 1230 eta. my freight was on the dock. we got a bunch of new guys, maybe they are still learning.

Bob Dobalina and FlaSwampRat Thank this.
