Also, location options where a reset might be prudent play a big part in my decision if/when/where to reset. I have a dozen or so preferred locations where I like to do a reset if necessary and doable. For me, a reasonably priced hotel (for probably 1 night only, but maybe 2 nights, depending), lots of dining choices within walking distance, and other available nearby attractions and amenities play into my decision-making process.

I don't do resets in a truck stop and 100% in the truck unless there is just no other workable option.

I always wanted to be home weekends any way, so it was never a question for me.
I remember J.B. Hunt told us in orientation (paper log days) about the "8.75 hrs. a day" formula---wanted to (and should have) walk out right then...but I didn't, and regretted every stinking second of working for them. I knew after THAT experience, A). I wasn't ever gonna let anyone else control my logbook (and pay check), and B). I wouldn't work for anyone else that wouldn't get me home on weekends.

Lot of good advice already on how to use the recap to your advantage...so if that's your thing, do it---but it's my experience that the 'restart' is/was a much better option for productivity and better checks (and it's nice to get the hell out of the truck every week too---to restart your road-rage sensor).

I prefer a restart. I want my day off to relax and spend a couple hours, with no rush, going over the truck, beyond a pretrips. Plus getting to go visit some places if I'm near anything.
I'm running recap right now and I'm so grouchy and tired. Even though I may have only 8 hours, i still seem to end up pulling a 14 hour day

The lane I'm on doesn't allow freight to sit on the truck over the weekend, the receivers aren't open on the weekends, and the runs are less than 400 miles. I haven't run off a recap in years, and I always take my reset at home, so I run 13.5 hour days if need be.

There's 168 hrs in a 7 week ,you have 70 hrs to use leaving 98hrs. Plenty of time to do a 34 and still hit your preferred weekly mileage.
Yes I've done two and still hit my goal for the week .
34' s go quick and getting a 34 in IMO is the best way to go. Not only do you not have to sweat your hrs, you have what is need for any trip the may pop up.

80% of my resets are done at a truckstop and there is no way I am parting with my hard earned money for a hotel room when I have a free bed 2ft away.

Not only that your truck is probably a 100% more sanitary than a room.
    I know mine is.

Newbee here to Truckers report but not new to trucking.
MY opinion on this issue is if you work 70 hrs in 6 days in a year you can do that 52 times and resets are automatic.
If you work 70 hrs in 8 days you only get to do that 45 times for a net loss of over 400 hrs worked in a year. Is my math wrong?
8.75 hrs a day 7 days a week I'm going broke and i'll be really bored with life . Much better with a reset and DO something that interests you preferably with some body movement.

My theory, use 10 hours a day 7 days running. 8th day take 24 hours off; effectively 24 is a 34 because for the next 7 days you will have 10 hours coming back on recaps. You look great to the office people being available every day with a big 10 hours available.

The problem with a 34 is you never know when you start it, it may end in the evening and you're effectively going to be unproductive for closer to 48+ hours and perhaps at a place you don't really want to be trapped for 2 solid days.

Another reason is we get paid on a 7 day cycle not an 8 day cycle.
