    howdy.

20+ years ago i got a reckless driving ticket. i had forgotten all about it. haven't had much reason to think about it over the past 20+ years. so when i applied online at a trucking company and they asked if i had ever had a reckless driving ticket i said no. wasn't lying just honestly didn't remember it.

then a couple days later i remember i had the reckless driving ticket from when i was young and dumb as a box of hair. so now i'm worried. if i pony up and tell the recruiter when i talk to him maybe i won't get hired. but if i don't tell him and they find it on my record somehow i definitely won't get hired because they'll think i was trying to hide it.

what are the chances that a reckless driving ticket from over 20 years ago will show up on a background check? what are the chances that a company will choose not to hire me with a reckless driving ticket from over 20 years ago? my MVR since then has been pretty clean and has been spotless for the past 10 years.

    thanks.

    Don't mention it.
It's 20 years ago. You've wised up - and kept the hair :) or are you bald?

    Seriously though it's a non-issue IMO

No worries being that old of a violation. Just remember, following to close is considered reckless driving and will more than likely end your career. I see this daily, big trucks tailgating other trucks and cars in an aggressive manor. Only a DUI is worse to a CDL and both are serious.

thank you gentlemen (or ladies, maybe, can't tell online always) for your responses.

the reckless driving incident occurred in a different state from my current state of residence. i went to the website for that state's dmv and did some research. major traffic violations aside from dwi and oos violations (e.g. reckless driving or driving on a suspended license) do indeed drop off after five years like magoo68 said so i am now pretty confident that it won't show up in a background search. so i will just let sleeping dogs lie when i talk to the recruiter.

Don't even put it on the application.Trust me you'll be fine.I have a reckless from yrs back.i never put that on application.Only thing companies are concerned about is if it happened during their time frame. For example if they require no reckless within the last three yrs and you got one two yrs ago then youre not b
hireable with that company. But 20 yrs ago,i doubt it's even on your record.

well the problem was that in this case the time frame for this particular company is "ever". have you "ever" had a reckless driving ticket. the correct answer to that question in my case is "yes", because i have. so maybe this company will disqualify you for even one incident 20+ years ago. i have no way of knowing.

i personally would like to think that a 20+ year old reckless driving ticket would not disqualify me from a trucking job even if they knew about it. i am certainly not the same person now i was 20 years ago so why not let bygones be bygones. but if theres no way for them to find out i dont see any reason to take the risk.

That long ago will not tarnish your chances even if you did put that reckless on the application.I don't know of one company that goes that far back. Most I've ever seen was five yrs.So if company says ever then put the yr down but like I said that far back will not affect your chances.
