I'd rather do a minimum of night driving as a solo driver. Is it best to stay away from refrigerated freight?

    Ooops Thanks this.

A lot of the deliveries are made at night.

I also don't really like to drive at night.

I think it just depends on the customer, for me it's not as often as some seem to think.

Where I work 1/4 of the driving is night on reefer. Food warehouses are always booked so they unload 24 7

I run long haul OTR reefer. I do probably 70% of my miles in my preferred window of 05:00-17:00 +/- 2 hours either end some days.

But not all fleets allow this regularly.

Any more, it's not a given that reefer freight means night shift. Where I work, it's all over the map, some days, some nights, some split logging. Reefer loads are many times JIT freight like dry loads, so many places have normal hours. The one advantage of pulling a reefer is, you can pull most dry loads in a reefer, but you can't pull reefer freight in a van, so when one segment of freight may hit a slow point, you'd have more possibilities to stay running with a reefer.

At our 100% reefer fleet. Only maybe 1 in 40 loads is dry. Reefer freight never slows down. If it slows, you can bet dry freight is slow[er]

I hauled frozen food for shoprite grocery stores in a day cab. Started at 5 a.m. And would deliver to 3 or 4 stores in nj, ny, or philly. Got paid $17 per stop and 47 cents per mile.

The trailer would be loaded and ready in the morning....no waiting to get loaded....just find your trailer and hook it up.
They would do a live unload at each stop, in about 45 minutes on average. It was my first reefer job, and there were no problems. They fueled the reefer tank, and drivers did the tractors.
