1) not every place will pay you $3-$4 with people and companies charging nowhere near that, make your rates too high and nobody will hire you
2) cheap freight is better than no freight. its better to break-even or make hardly any money than to be sitting there
3) cheap freight is the standard, end of story
you know what, keep turning down cheap freight. more freight for me
Reefer rates!

1) wrong

3) wrong
I operate in much the same manner as this guy does only with a dry van. You're a sucker if you think cheap freight is better than no freight. It's really no wonder at all guys like you believe in #3 because you make it so easy for everyone to take advantage of you - yet you act surprised.Ukumfe Thanks this. -
if they don't like your rate they'll hire somebody else
breaking even is much better than having no freight, with breaking even you are at least paying your bills, no freight and you're sitting making no money
if you really honestly think making no money is better than breaking even then more power to you -
I dont understand the break even logic. The day will come along when your under one of these loads and the unfortunate break down may occur. Then you are scurrying to rent a truck or cover the load some how and suddenly it dawned upon you that your upside down on it. Sitting waiting for a better rate doesnt seem so bad now. Youll still be stuck with a tow bill, but at least it wouldnt hurt so bad. With all the liability and bs that gets dished out to us anymore, I would never consider hauling anything just for fuel. Id rather pump gas for Mr. Hartunian

Jabber, what do you think your time is worth? What is the point of firing up the truck and moving someone else's freight just so you can say you went to work?
You are correct if they don't like your rate they will hire someone else. So go ahead, chase that $1-$1.50 mile freight and haul all of it you want. You might "pay the bills" for a while - but you have forgotten your own PROFIT.
1) Companies will and do pay $3 and more on a regular basis. It isn't always about truck demand/time of year, it is about the service you can provide to the customer.
2) "cheap freight" is not always better than no freight. If you were in Chicago looking to go to Atlanta, and you found a load paying exactly the same (total gross dollars here) as another load picking up in say Indianapolis also going to Atlanta, why would you haul the Chicago load?? GO EMPTY and tell the Chicago guy he has to pay more or else you are leaving it. Then follow through. Not hard.
3) If you think "cheap freight" is the norm then you obviously place zero importance of what customers are willing to pay for good service. I can already tell if you were to go and buy your truck today, you would be another one of these guys figuring how to squeeze every penny per mile out of fuel savings and tire wear and the cheapest truck etc etc etc, rather than having a pair and charging a customer a FAIR rate for the level of SERVICE you provide. -
You obviously don't have a clue about running a business. Here's the deal. Breaking even is just a nice way to say going broke slowly.
You sit and pick off what's left over. What others wouldn't take. Sure there are a lot of dummies out here who will work for nothing. That's fine because when you take the leftover at the rate you dictated you're making money. None of that keeping the wheels turning to come out at cost!?.* That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard running for cost.
I'm not out here to break even. I'm out here to make a profit and that's exactly what I do. When rates are good I'm busy making bank. When they're bad I'm sitting it out until they get better. That's the only way to truck. -
You guys do realize your trying to get your point across to someone ( JABBER ) who does not even own a truck but only drives 1 for IRT pulling a tanker so rates are nothing he has a say in or control over or any idea about .
Ukumfe Thanks this. -
wow you guys still goin on about this learn to rate your truck for profit thats th business were in. STOP HAULING CHEAP!!!!!!!!! YOU MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM TO MOVE IT CHEAP NEXT TIME. I bet you run 150k miles and turn around $250 and think its good no its not. I turn with my drivers around 2400 miles a week and they always make with deadhead around $3mile all miles. I stay busy year round as cheap carriers always breakdown and my equipment breaksdown and i tell them charge me whatever need him running today why cuz i can afford that. cheap haulers cant afford that or go broke. rollin coal i thought your were smarter then that!!!!!
