My DOT card expires in a couple of weeks and had a question about that new National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (https://nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov/NRPublicUI/home.seam).

First off do you guys/gals think I will have better luck with a chiropractor than a MD? Also lets say I go to the medical office that is on the list do I have to ask for the person who has a valid registry # listed or is every examiner in that office acceptable? Basically I just think it's annoying if I have to ask the chiropractor their name then I have to do a quick search on my phone to make sure their name is on that list. Just seems to add to the stress of the situation.

Knowing my luck the person may be on the NRCME list but somehow got their validation revoked recently and a couple of months go by then I will find out my CDL has been suspended while I am moving freight in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the helpful input and any other tips would greatly be appreciated.

The company that you work for should send you to a Dr. they use for these physicals.

Not all companies pay for DOT Physicals, lots of them don't.

The simple way to do it is find a Doctor on the NRCME website and set up a physical with them...they are either certified or they aren't, no in between. They have a registry number that as of May they have to put on your Long Form and health card.

As far as a chiropractor or MD, I really see no advantage or disadvantage with either one...The physical is no more rigorous than in years past. As long as you don't look like the walking dead...or huff and wheeze just from walking in from the parking lot... or have blood pressure and or blood sugar levels off the charts, Its the same as in years past.

They do ask a lot more questions to see if you have sleep apnea, but actual testing is still not required by DOT at this point. They write you BMI on your long form now.

If you are worried about a non-certified doctor certifying you...Highly unlikely, in fact nearly impossible...they will be in far more doodoo than you if that were the case. And you would have some recourse against them for not being qualified. Most doctors who did the physicals knew about the new registry over a year before it was made law, they are either in or out.

    Dewey120 Thanks this.

Okay so I will double check for registry number on the long form before I pay/leave office. I had a pre -physical with my primary care physician and everything was good except my weight. My PCP said eventually that will catch up to me so I have already started working on getting control of that.

I wish my PCP could do the physical since I have been going to her on a regular basis for the last 6 years and she knows me best but of course that would be to easy.

You are making this way harder than it needs to be !!!
Go to the web site get the name of a person on the list and get a appointment for the physical .
That easy no need for all the double checking and worrying about revoked this or out of date that just tell them you need a DOT physical and like the saying goes just do it !!!!

Unless your BMI is over 35 they won't bat an eye, even up until a BMI close to 40 they really dont raise a ruckus. To be that big usually you would already be diabetic and have blood pressure problems. For example, at 5'10 and 205 lbs, with my frame I am borderline obese, yet my BMI is still under 30. I would have to be at 240 lbs to be over 35 BMI. Any bigger than that and I would look like a walking heart attack waiting to happen.

They now write your BMI on the long form though, so something more stringent regarded height/weight/fat may be in the works.
