I would never recommend a contract, the pay is reduced much more than the cost of school. School cost me $4k....and I made 29cpm up to 36cpm in 6 months. If you only drive 2000 miles a week, every cent is $1000 a year. Most companies will cut your pay more than 4 cents, so you lose out and have no freedom either. Werner pays about $10k more than CR England, and Crete pays more than a grand more than Werner... So taking company training can cut your first year of pay by 20 grand in some cases!
Seriously, call some small local schools and see about their financing... It should be easy.

I fully agree... Many Community Colleges or State Colleges offer a CDL program... Then you also qualify for an educational loan and six months delayed payments until you are up and running good with free choice as to where to go and which company to hire on with...

I attended a Sage School in Florida... Mixed feelings... Yes, I got my CDL at the end and found a great company (not from them but here on TTR)...
But... Fairly disappointed too... They mainly taught you how to "take/pass the tests"... My favorite part was "when doing a blind side parallel park line up with the stop sign across the street"... As if that stop sign is ever going to be there during such a maneuver beyond testing... LOL ... My real training came after I started driving.
So, yes, it got me my CDL and a way to get employeed in a Driving position (they REALLY pushed Werner hard... Say kick back?)
But it was rather expensive for what I got out of it. -
I would never go with the "free" training because nothing is ever free. Seriously work any job do what you gotta do maybe ask a family member for help but pay cash, go to school on your own. It's way better to feel free to do what you want without having a monkey on your back. Best move I made was paying for it on my own.
MidWest_MacDaddy Thanks this.
