Both I-70 Westbound lanes closed due to crash near Mile 8

A buddy of mine sent these photos to me and gave me permission to post them. This Prime truck was coming down the hill and missed the curve yesterday. He took out a big stretch of guard rail and backed up westbound traffic over 10 miles.

The first set of pictures were taken through a dirty window. Eastbound was backed up for miles too with all the rubberneckers so he got some pics on the way past.

Second group of pics is on his way back yesterday afternoon while they were doing recovery. Traffic was still reduced down to one lane. He sent me a picture of the driver looking really forlorn standing at the back of the trailer, but as mean as I am, I just couldn't bring myself to post them here. The poor guy didn't even have a 7-11 nearby where he could go buy a beer and sit on the curb, which, as we all know, is the correct thing to do in a situation like this.

Last two were today showing where the driver was when he lost it, and the guard rail the truck took out.

The driver was cited for failure to maintain control. It looks to me like he wasn't paying attention, was going down the hill pretty fast, and then looked up and overcorrected in the curve, but that's just a guess.

He is lucky to be alive. Had the cab laid on the guard rail, it wouldn’t have been pretty.

Unfortunately, the wife didn't get any pictures of the Knight rider that dropped his trailer on I-40 in NC today or of the driver who chose gravel going up over asphalt coming down (same highway and state) today.

I’d say it’s TOTAL given that they filled the dumpster up,never mind the environmental cleanup from the diesel fuel spilled when the driver laid it over. Chances are he either he missed a gear or had the truck in the wrong one to begin with.
The past few times I’ve been through the area WV State Police and occasionally county sheriffs have been patrolling those hills looking for anyone who come down too fast.

Even if they did go down too fast and are caught, there is no good place to get stopped until just past that curve about half a mile in that bowl until the next ridge as the Wheeling Border looms with that left lane tunnel needed for crossing. Most all truckers will be way over in the left by that bridge/tunnel system.

That hill is very easy to come off at cruise speed thinking easy peasy. Halfway down they realize the enormity of their errors. Now the State can step in and childproof that grade Patrolling is after the horse and cart is left the barn for better or worse.

That’s right past the Highlands exit where Cabelas is. Wonder if he got over due to merging traffic and got fishy after already going too fast.

Ive always hated that little hill. You would think as a mountain god I would not worry about such minor details. But this particular hill is one of a few that had my name on it. It was a winter icing down there with snow up top. Having finally got out of the rain prior to that state line.

I'll say this once. Those three lanes and that curve was useful in nursing that trailer back into behaving. It had got away from me halfway down. I went full right side. The curve came up held the trailer around then allowed the tractor to slide left.

Thankfully the trailer fell into line. Then I had to gather up all my #### fast and calm before that stupid bridge and left lane in tunnel. It was half of ohio and two packs of smokes plus a drink in those days to calm my nerves which was pretty much like that of a exhausted 80 year old. And i was only 24. I should not have to be that shook bad. One of those days where it was attractive to pull into say Toledo, get a date for the night and tell the boss where he can stick the truck.

    Temptations.
