I've posted a few times through this forum but I have yet another situation that has been thrown at me. With taking on responsibilities of the compliance area, I have also been addressed with holding the annual safety meeting. I've googled and googled (worst handouts EVER) and then read through some of the threads here about safety guys and whatnot. This meeting isn't going to be awesome, I know that. I've never been in this type of safety meeting before, only the safety meetings for plumbers and OSHA since my previous job was office at a plumbing company. What can I do to make this not suck? (Not holding the meeting is not an option.) What topics can we discuss that will actually mean something and not be just another redundant blurb that the drivers have heard every time they hold one of these meetings?

I say just go for it...Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission they say. Lol.

Looking at the company safety record... focus on the two or three most common tickets and violations. Make suggestions on how to avoid. If you don't know how to avoid them (I don't know your background) ask the experts (drivers).

You might also look into safety issues that are on the rise over previous years.

Provide donuts if you want good attendance. Good luck!

Try getting a 2 way dialogue going. I find I'm much more likely to pay attention and be receptive if I'm being talked to and am able to respond and make suggestions, rather than being talked at.

Food is a must at my meetings. It screams "please attend and like me" which I am very fond of... We don't have any major violations, just one guy that had issues wearing his safety belt before working here. I ask the drivers EVERYTHING. They know way more than I ever will so I consider them my main source of info. Unfortunately, they are all booked before the meeting and my boss just told me she hasn't done these types of meetings either. I've never driven truck, ever. I am clueless as to what the real hazards are for these drivers so the last thing I want to do is start on a topic that isn't even relevant.

I'm not a fan of talking at people, mainly because I don't like being talked at either. I just can't seem to find a decent topic for the safety meeting. I did print off one item that is about looking twice when doing a task such as pre-trip inspection.

Could talk the boss into raffling off some stuff. But its gotta be worthwhile. Something like a gift card for satellite radio, cb, flashlight. Might keep guys interested.

So is the topic of Driving Safely in Construction zones a good idea? We just lost 2 drivers recently and they were the only ones that really could have had many unsafe practices to speak of...
