Hmmmm, I was told there wasn't any freight in the Portland area and I had to wait until tomorrow for a load. 4 hours later at 2300 I got a preassignment to pickup a relay from the Portland OC that goes to Sparks NV. A relay that had been sitting at the Portland OC since 1300...

See its said that sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. In SNI'S case neither hand knows what it's doing much less what the other hand is doing

I woke up this morning with Jill saying my assignment was remove, 1 hr before I have to wake up. They gave me the same customer but different numbers.

Turns out I got the short end of the stick because my load was ready but the new 1 I have isnt rdy. Shipper ask to pickup a loaded one since they had 5 rdy. Sitting for 2 hours while dispatch gave me 3 pickup numbers which none are rdy...

It wouldn't matter if today wasn't my last day till I get to go home. 3 times in a row I had to work an extra day for a few hours just to get home.

So I had a bit of a day. Picked up in Omaha this morning, load ready time of 0600, get there at 0730 and guard tells me it's not ready and he has no idea when it will be. It was supposed to be ready, they just haven't gotten to it yet. No other freight leaving Omaha heading towards the Chicago market, so back to Council Bluffs to practice backing with my trainee, calling every 30 minutes (as instructed by the customer) to see when the load is ready.

10:30 it's finally ready, drive back, drop the MT (which was a very unnescesary ordeal -thought the 5'4, 105 lb, 60 year old female yard jockey was going to end my trainee for his stupidity), go to hook to the loaded trailer. You know how after you sweep out a trailer dirt etc gets on the lip around the lights? The passanger side is covered in Fruit Loops, and you can see crushed Fruit Loops in the door. I take some pictures and call cargo claims, go back to the guard to get permission to break the seal and make sure everything's A-Okay. Guard says no, call back to claims who calls the customer's corportate headquarters, who calls the shipper, who says break the seal and I'll come look. Pop open the doors and there are Fruit Loops everywhere. The massive bags (think the large, tall, skinny paper roll size) seem to be intact, but obviously something went wrong during the loading process. Shipping supervisor said "something probably broke and he just didn't clean it up very well". I thought about mentioning their very anal stance on clean trailers but held my tongue.

Cargo Claims and the CSR were both happy I made an issue out of it. The shipper thought I was making much ado about nothing. Was I being overly anal?

CYA at all times. If it's a live load, I don't let them seal the trailer until I look at the inside, I don't care what their policy is. If it's preloadedand something draws my attention, that trailer get opened(of at the customer) and I verify the integrity of the cargo. If its at a dropyard and I think there's something wrong with it, I take pics and let someone know and take it from there.

Whenever I look at the Northwest on the load board the few loads that are there pay terrible, like the worst in the country pretty much.
I've seen OR to CA for $0.60!

I would say it was an excellent opportunity to train for and show trainee what to look for and guard against. absolutely the right thing.
