The big misconception people have is they think the trucks will be rolling down the highways by themselves. Way too many liability issues for that to happen. They will still need a driver for city driving, backing, etc. As mentioned before, it will be more like an auto-pilot feature. Forget about a robot driver, Kilroy.

It is likely there will be no self driving trucks, instead there will be self driving trailers. The only need for a power unit is to pull the towing unit. It is eventual because the inefficiency with the current labor requirements to facilitate the movement of semi-trucks is too great and economic factors will influence the advent of autonomous driving technology. However, there will likely always be a need for a person to supervise the load through transit as leaving freight unattended does not seem to be an option. Freight supervising will be a profession unlikely to become obsolete and it is currently being occupied by the modern day truck driver because they are already tasked with the responsibility to supervise the load.
