Keeping an extra belt on the truck isn't a bad idea, but....I asked for spare belts for my truck and was told they aren't allowed to give them to company drivers. L/O sure, but not company. I said I was a former auto mechanic and know how to change belts, they said sorry, company policy. I also asked for windshield wipers, which I got, and washer squirters (because mine suck, even after running a wire thru them to clean them out), but he wouldn't give me those. So I'm allowed to change the wipers, but not a little piece of plastic attached to the end of a rubber hose and clipped to the wiper arm? Ok. I once had a guy who spent 30 minutes trying to change his wipers in a rain storm come to my shop to get them replaced. I did it in two minutes. I can imagine some of the desk jockey turned truck drivers trying to change the wipers on their truck.

You're right. Most big companies don't want you touching anything. I guess there are some drivers out there that would cause more harm than good is why.
I think drivers that can offer simple repairs themselves tend to take better care of their ride and keep it going. I usually go spare parts shopping during second shift. Most of them guys don't care with no boss around. Paying $600 for a $30 repair is ludicrous. That could be a bonus for someone.scottied67 Thanks this. -

I love it when drivers here assist with professional advice to those drivers who find themselves in a difficult situation, are probably a little bit stressed, and need immediate help; especially when they are out there OTR and need answers. It always seems to be the same people helping too!
To you who do this......I/Wescottied67 Thanks this. -
Speaking of wipers, I was up in one of those snowbegotten states a couple weeks back and my windshield was frozen over. I took the driver's side wiper off because it turned into an icicle then took it inside the Love's there to see if they had a replacement. Yep, only $6.
Then I recalled a post Injun wrote about angling the visors to capture the defroster air and my windshield stayed hot and the ice always turned to water then was easily wiped away.
So this forum has been an invaluable source of information that has kept me out of trouble as well as incredible entertainment from certain members lol. -
When ever I get into a snowy situation, I crank the defrost on hi, max heat and max fan. Yes it gets hot in the truck, but if I crack the windows down a little it helps and my windshield stays mostly clear. Angling the visors may help some too. I'll have to try that next time.
Since you posted that you did get approval for a tow, I'm hoping that you are now or soon will be somewhere safe and getting a new belt put on. Learn from this and pay attention to details on that PTI.scottied67 Thanks this. -
Putting the visors down helps keep the defrosters from drying out your eyeballs too.

The guy had a 3/4 ton Chevy pickup. I said 'no way, I'm 79,000 pounds'. He threw a chain on the receiver ring in my bumper and towed me lol. That's how you git er done in Texas. You should'a heard all the S talk on CB "oh lookie, a chevy pulling a volvo" or "lookie lookie there, a chevy pulling a swift truck". Of course all the resident experts in the peterbilts speculating on what all the problems volvos are 'famous' for lol. He towed me to the edge of town then told me to fire it up and follow him a few blocks to his shop. So I'm just kicking back waiting for the repower and morning for the new belt because they have to order it. I got a hot load of cookies that needs to go 500 more miles by 11 AM Texas time! -
Injun Thanks this.
