There is a govt program to help pay for cdl school. You can check with the local schools to find out about it, or with the unemployment office. Also local community colleges have programs. Cdl schools can also offer light courses for ppl who already have a job and need their cdl, but the company is willing to accept fewer training hours. There may be options besides asking owner ops to loan you their truck. Hard to rent a truck without a cdl to get your cdl.

You can study online than in most major cities there are companies that rent trucks to take the test, they accompany you to the test sight . Some know the route and will run you through it so you have an idea . The second time I got my CDL this is how it was done , in Tx of course.

Just beware.....due to Federal Regs...... the 160 hour certificate is starting to become the norm.... regardless of your specific situation. ( Did anyone notice how I avoided the word "irregardless" : )

C'mon ZVar.....you were supposed to flame me for being a grammar nazi...... Yes you are correct....but many if not most "reputable" companies now require it.

Great practice tests here....... 2020 FREE CDL Test Practice - All Endorsements

I chose to use a school as I needed the 160 hours to sign on to a company. If the apprenticeship does not require it there are companies out there that will take you and a truck to the site for the test. Here in SW Missouri I have seen 3 such companies. The permit part of the testing is the easiest. Knowing the lot moves is a challenge for many. I am just finishing my class with a kid that drove a yard truck. He thought he had it made, but still we think it will be 50-50 on passing as he insists he can do it his own way.

Best of luck. My friend in Cali just got his line haulers license and he had to test with a pole in tow behind his truck. Don't know if it was CHP or his company that made it go that way.
