Nostalgic is right strapping the bottom layer a the smart way to go.
And yes full width dunnage also helps to build a base for each layer, I preferred to use at least 2 pieces per top lift.

CAXPT, cke and singlescrewshaker Thank this.

As a young man I hauled lumber 2 to 3 loads per week for 4 years and learned that strapping each layer was the best way to go and I taught load security for the company for 2 of those years until moving to the heavy haul side.

Ratchet straps or winches on both sides of the trailer, run the strap under the load and over the top back to the same rail then another strap on the opposite side, front and back of each bundle.
Secure as usual, you will never worry about load shifting.

I used to love and hate lumber loads. I loved the nice square loads of 4x4's or 2x4's. Tarp it up real neat and easy and be secured and outta there in an hour and a half. Then there was the other loads like pine lumber that would snap or splinter if you cranked down on it too hard, the ones that were impossible to tarp cause it's stacked so uneven, and of course the terrible band jobs on bundles. I'd make my own bands with 2" straps, one in front one in back then I'd secure with the 4". Usually it would work well

I swear Ive loaded in Camden. But that mill doesn't look familiar. But it doesn't matter what mill it is, you have to watch them and what they put on you.

Every bundle needs 3-4 straps and you have to crank the F out of them. Then stop and crank again, then if I stop for food/fuel, I crank it again. Lumber always moves on me. No matter what I do. I had 2x6x2 in 8ft long bundles last week out of a mill in Ar and I had to tighten my straps 4 times in 240mi on a same day delivery.

    CAXPT and pavrom Thank this.

Not that it matters much to you guys but the bundles are upside down. Red flag that the yard doesn't know what they are doing

Gut strap around the first layer would have helped

    Siinman and CAXPT Thank this.

We loaded at a few different pallet stock mills in the NW that banded the stickers on top and used 8ft dunnage under the first units. I wouldn’t call it a red flag. The only time it sucked for us is when we had to tarp and had to crawl up with a hammer to knock all the corners down.

I agree with this post. People were either in too big of a hurry to do their job, don't care about doing their job correctly or both. Probably wasn't known to you at all until they started stacking it all on the trailer.

    CAXPT Thanks this.
