Should autonomous CMV's bypass weigh stations?

The way I understand the process is that there will be a 40 hour certification course for people to be enabled to do pre, post, an en route inspections on autonomous CMV'S.

At origin, destination, and every 24 hour period.

The data will be electronically communicated, for example with Drivewyze, and the ACMV'S will bypass weigh stations and inspection stations with one reason being there isn't a driver to assist in the inspection. ACMV's will still need to have the ability to comply with a traffic stop, with a stated example being equipment malfunction.

The autonomous firm Kodiak (or something similar) has a current run from DAL to ATL and has recently announced the joint venture with PFJ, specifically at its Villa Rica, GA location to take part in the process.

I think it's fair to extrapolate how this so called inspection process will play out with techs at those locations.

    My questions:

    1. The certification course culminates with a test, probably similar to the test required to obtain a cdl, if they are similar should all drivers be enabled to recertify their pretrip skills annually to have the same privilege of automatic bypass of weight and inspection stations?

    2. Do you think a Drivewyze account and maybe an attached eld communication requirement will be enacted for all CMV's that will automatically upload diagnostics, hos, and inspection info to government agencies and if so when?

For #1, the followup, should autonomous be able to bypass weight and inspection stations?

They should go into weight stations like everyone else ….

Rumor on the street is kids are putting those orange cones that are around construction sites over the sensors that the autonomous cabs have. The cars just stop and are frozen in place……..

Activists putting cones on the hoods of self-driving cars to stop them

can only imagine them doing the same to trucks

    1. No, because weigh station stops are for checking compliance with equipment and credentialing regulations. These regulations apply to all CMVs, not just those that are manually operated. All of us with CDLs already had to prove our pre and post trip skills when we took the CDL exam. Annual recertification would not improve the quality or quantity of PTIs, they would merely increase the cost of compliance and encumber drivers with another hoop to have to jump through.

This industry is already heavily over-regulated. We need to be reducing regulations and cost of compliance, not adding more to what we already have.

For #1, autonomous vehicles can have the same malfunctions enroute just like human driven vehicles. DOT is there to catch those before they become out of control.

Interesting link, following that train of thought, in certain desolate routes piracy may be as simple as a cone and bolt cutters.

I remember at the turn of the millennium a story about a stretch of highway in Oregon with only two LEO'S for a surprisingly long stretch for example 150 miles.

There's some activism I can finally agree with.

I've seen Maximum Overdrive, I can see that stuff coming true one day.

Sooooo, when a DOT officer wants to do an inspection on a truck away from a scale location, how do they get an autonomous truck to pull over to be inspected....things that make you go hmmmmm.
