Because "WE" are supposed to be pro's and sometimes whether we pro's like it or not we have to make adjustments for the amatures that we come into contact with daily...

I WILL NOT VIOLATE A TRAFFIC LAW AND GET MYSELF A TICKET FOR SOMEONE THAT DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO MERGE...But I will try to make everyone around me in traffic a little more comfortable with my presence and do my part to facilitate the flow of traffic.

    The answer IS.............

    It depends.

IF I determine it's safe to do so.......I'll move over.

IF NOT.......you better be prepared to take evasive action and NOT HIT ME.

LIKEWISE......If it's me that's doing the merge........I'll give headway and fall in behind instead of pulling out and causing you to jam on your brakes.

Timing has a LOT to do with all this stuff.

That goes with "Learning how to merge"

Bottom line here is that if I'm ALREADY THERE.......IT BELONGS TO ME......If I CAN.......I'll give it to you........IF..........YOU'LL LET ME BACK OVER WHERE I WAS IN THE FIRST PLACE.......or get the FLOCK out of my way so I can move back over.

I might need to get off at the next exit. I can't do that if you're riding alongside my drive tires......without slowing down and possibly causing more problems.

Same with you.......If everybody understood this and paid attention......fewer accidents would happen.

AND YES........I've been in the move over into the "Forbidden " lane situation before as well......to avoid an accident. Luckily I got an older Georgia Trooper that understood the situation and let me off with a verbal warning.

My instructor taught us that moving over to let cars on is a 'last resort' only. It creates more danger for me the trucker to move over and then move back. I'll take that under advisement and use my discretion thanks.

Four wheelers are on their own to find a hole unless I'm in a very good mood and don't have to exit any time soon. I do however make an effort to give a fellow truck drivers room to merge when I can, most of them do the same for me so I'm just paying it forward.

For all of the drivers in the last 31 years of driving, I would like to thank all of the professional drivers and four wheelers that moved over or slowed down to let me on from a ramp. I have tried to reciprocate by showing this courtesy to others no matter what the law.

It is no doubt their responsibility. Are you required to move over? No. You have every right to, "stand your ground". But if you can safely change lanes and help out another driver, why not? I think what your instructor should have said was not to change your speed.
If someone can safely change lanes that will only serve to make life safer for everyone. The people that I have a problem with are the ones that change their speed. As I come down the ramp I am making my decision on how to merge by judging the speed of the vehicles I'm trying to merge with. So often someone on "the big road" messes things up by changing their speed. Even if they are doing this to be nice it still messes things up.

Instructors and truck driving schools in general are why we have so many piss poor drivers in the industry these days.
