I got my cdl the month I turned 18, I’m 20 now and have worked for an ag company since I got my cdl hauling non hazmat chemicals, I love pulling a tank, way more than a hopper bottom, I want to get into fuel or something along those lines when I turn 21 in September. I was wondering if it’s a good choice or if they’ll even accept a 21 year old with what will be a brand new hazmat or if it is something that’s a “desirable choice in the trucking industry, I already wait in the field when I’m dispatched there so waiting isn’t a big deal. If that isn’t the way to go, which do you guys recommend?
Should I pursue tankers w/ hazmat

I can only speak about what it’s like here on the west coast, but there’s always a company around that’ll take on a pretty new driver. Mind you it’ll usually always be on nights and weekends.

Fuel hauling can be a good gig. One thing you have to get used to, however, is navigating into gas stations with cars coming in and out. I have a buddy that's a fuel hauler and he works nights just to avoid dealing with the cars coming in and out of the stores.

You'll have almost 3 yrs. tanker experience when you turn 21, so plenty of opportunities for you.
Finding a company that hires 21 yr. olds for hazmat tanker kinda limits you, but those companies are out there.FullMetalJacket and Haydenwitt31 Thank this. -
CDL Truck Driver – Currently Hiring Illinois, Iowa, & Wisconsin - Quality Liquid Feed
This one has you need 12 mos OTR experience. Maybe that can be waived since you'll have around 3 yrs. total experience.

I am constantly navigating tight backroads and going into tight field entrances, so I think I should be okay with that the only thing would be like you said the other people in vehicles, but with everything new there’s always some learning, thank youFullMetalJacket and Frank Speak Thank this.
