Why are showers at truck stops so expensive?? $12.00 a day translates into $372 a month! My entire power bill at home is a fraction of that. How can truckers afford it?

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

What would you charge for folks to come to your house and use your shower, then clean up their mess, and launder the towells?

It's called a captive market. Think about it, if you had a product or service that did not have many competitors and people needed the service on a regular basis. If the shower was $999 no one would use it and the market would come up with a cheaper alternative but at the current price point it is as expensive as it can be and people will accept it without causing other businesses trying to come up with a cheaper alternative that would make a bigger profit.

Spend some time out here and you’ll quickly realize that a sizable population of drivers don’t even use the free showers they have from getting fuel.

But for the rest of us, most of the time we have free showers available somewhere. For me, I almost always have showers available at PFJ and Kwik Trip because those are the locations we have to fuel. I’m not opposed to paying for a shower at Loves or a nice mom and pop. If I want to shower I won’t let $12 or $15 keep me from being clean. There are also places like Phoenix where I’ll reserve a parking spot at the Flying J but I’ll still walk across the street to Danny’s and pay for shower because I refuse to wait in line behind 20+ people for a free one at the J.

As others have said free showers. I on average actully buy a shower maybe 1 or 2 times a month at most and only because as a rock bucket i end up at rural ma and pas as often as not. And even most of those as long as they accept my fuel card will at least give a discount. According to my tax book here i spent all of $172 on showers last year. And even if i had to pay for every single shower i would. I prefer not smelling like dead animals, urine and BO

As already alluded to, get a rewards card for all of the biggies (Love’s, Pilot, Flying J, etc…). If you fuel more than 50 gallons, you’ll get a free shower. Once you fuel 1000 gallons (I think that’s the number for most) in a month, you get free showers for the month.

Bottom line, it should be a rare occasion you have to pay for a shower.

Tip: If you don’t have a shower on your card, hang out by the kiosk and politely ask another driver if they can select the “Have a co-driver” option so you can shower. It doesn’t cost them anything (not even an extra shower credit) so most will oblige you. Just make sure you pay it forward. ;)

The one bad thing about getting better MPG's is showers are not free everyday.

I still burn over 1000 gallons a month, so I hit shower power at Pilot for the following month. Kwik Trip is 75 gallons I think and they stay on for a week. Definitely takes more planning with a good truck. I’ve gotten toward the end of a month and paid a little more for fuel at a Pilot just to have free showers the next month.
