Even though we appear to have run them off . .

They are looking to save money for a business - NOT buy a truck, ie, 2 year career as truck drivers.

45k is more realistic. especially new driver also if you pay cash for driver school its about 3k but if you finance through a truck driving school its 6k and they finance everybody but you pay! you clear 1k week being waiter? wow you must make great tips at a fancy restaurant. if you live in LA do you go out on party circuit and see the Biebs? (Justin Bieber)

For tax purposes, change your residency to Las Vegas, NV; no personal income taxes. This won't prevent you from spending your off time around your family in California or starting your business in California. You and wife can team with Watkins & Shepard; they hire new CDL graduates and have terminals in California and Las Vegas. That's one option!

You know what the easiest way to make a million dollars in the trucking business is? START WITH TWO!

Trucking is a hard business and not for the faint of heart, it comes with a lot of challenges, dangers, and plenty of adversity that will have to be overcome.

It is a good business and I certainly enjoy it, but if you want to make it in this business you have to be tough.

You prove to be good at this business, there are teams out there making in excess of 120K a year, but they have been at this business for years, and they have it down to a science. There is some god paying freight out there for teams, especially aviation related loads where once you move you are not allowed to stop for anything but fuel, but to get into jobs like that you first have to prove yourself.

Driving a 30' long truck pulling a 48-53' long trailer isn't like driving a car, especially not in a city like LA. There is a lot more responsibility and stress, and navigating that truck at times can really push the limits of your abilities. Now the only way to learn is to get out there and do it, but don't expect you are going to run out there jump right in and be a professional, that takes time, and some do better than others, and some get better at it faster than others.

You also have to consider that one of you might decide you don't like the business and what then if the other does? What if one of you wants to stick with it and the other is dying to go home?

There is a lot that can go wrong out here, expecting to make 60K a year your first year out, has it been done? Yes. Will you do it? Probably not. Now 2-5 years down the road, yeah, you could be out here making a great living. That is because by then you will be experienced drivers.

This is another one of those instances where a person HEARS what you say, but fails to LISTEN.

Wow. A lot to respond to... I'll try to get to all of it.

My wife and I are both pretty stable people. Despite our age, we're definitely more mature from a "party" standpoint than many of our peers. Never smoked pot, and neither of us likes alcohol, loud music, or STDs. I've been called a goody-goody a few too many times. So I'm not worried about "sacrificing" anything of that nature, and no, that isn't how we came up with the idea.

No, we clear $1k per week being a waiter AND a nanny. I make $600/week on average working 30-35 hours at The Cheesecake Factory. If you've never been there it's like a slightly upscale Applebees; a McDonald's for rich people/Arnie Morton's for poor people.

The age thing had definitely come to my mind, and I'm glad you said something, because you're right, she's only 21, and hasn't had a whole lot of driving experience. Although driving in LA will get you used to being aware of things really quickly, lol.

Again, we aren't looking to do this long-term. We're looking for an interesting way to save up about $50k in a few years which we would turn to start up a business (not related to trucking). We don't own a house.

Sounds like an alright idea.. Like someone else said it would suck if either of ya didn't get hired at the same company. Or if both made it but couldn't team for some reason.

I'm also young like you with little to no expenses, and in my first year managed to save 15k, without eating ramen noodles for dinner lol. It's do able.

    Good luck!

OP - I'd take those numbers to run with.

To stash 50k in 2 years you'll need to sock away 500 clear every week. Getting started and experienced to a point you can do that will take a year plus training.

    I'd look at a 3 to 4 year plan.

Here's an option; both attend a CDL school and hire on with Watkins & Shepard as a team. They have a terminal in Santa Fe Springs and Modesto. They will reimburse you both for CDL school tuition. Look at some CDL schools in your area, then call Watkins & Shepard and ask if they accept graduates from the schools you like. Google shows 19 CDL schools in Los Angeles area.

    Check Watkins & Shepard website.

I like this company because, unlike refrigerated companies, you won't waste hours and hours sitting at grocery warehouses and meat packing plants and produce distributors.

Yes you will, this is a touchy subject for many who see failure all around.

Don't get all of it, listen to it and think.

OK I get what you need but there is a problem with the idea of stepping into this and making X amount of money in a short time. There are better ways, a lot better ways to save $50k between the both of you. You both may not seem to understand this part unless you look around and think about it.

Understood where you are coming from but truthfully, I didn't like the cheesy factory when I was in cali (no offense) I just don't like franchised places like Applebees or other places where it is not really unique with a predictable menu. However my grandmother and father knew Evelyn and her family when they were here and the reason why I went there a few times.

    I digress ...

You have 35 hours of work out of what? 80 hours you can put into making money total?

Back to looking around making the money there, keeping everything intact so you are not taking chances with your plans or your life and you can do the $50k in a short time.

One thing that bothers me with these questions is the idea that driving is easy, even at your age, you are looking for a job, this is a profession and it takes time to learn how to drive and how to be safe. Many of us don't like the job attitude (no offense) while it drags us all down with marginal drivers and unprofessional attitudes - it's just a paycheck so who cares.

I wish you luck in getting the money.
