Thanks for sharing. What kind of trucks do you have? Got any recommendations on what will hold up the best on the road?
Anymore they’re all about the same, long as not a maxxforce engine, I’ve got a paccar, once it’s been gone through, it’s ok, but i wouldn’t buy another one. ‘16 cascadia, 579, ‘10 t660(spare on non commercial policy) and a ‘94 378 pete, project truck if i ever get some time to finish up on it.
I just started to see shippers ask for no more carrier soliciting this month. I assume guys are aggressively contacting them. That would be typical overcapacity. Don’t think things will get better until the overcapacity changes. Some politicians are still discussing about a truck driver shortage as recent as this month!?!
Driver shortages have always been around, and it’s a myth. More of a driver retention problem, they’ll (companies) blow smoke to get you there at their company, then show the true colors, and now you look like a job hopper until you find another who’s doing the same thing.
Does overcapacity subside when people just give up and stop trucking or is it more complicated than that?
There's an unlimited number of people who are willing to work for $200 a week and sleep in an air conditioned truck at night because it's 1000 times better than what they left.
Would it be more beneficial for me to lease on to another carrier when starting out rather than doing everything on my own first? Is it reasonable to keep my day job and do this at the same time?
It depends on your capital, business sense, etc… if you have doubts…crawl, walk, run (company driver, leased on o/o, motor carrier)
Ideally 50k in the bank minnimum after truck and trailer is acquired and paid for... More money the better. Never can have enough... If u still need to buy truck and trailer.. 100k+ in the bank to survive the junk that is available for sale.
