I used to peddle at YRC when I first started. After I was laid off I transferred to the distribution terminal (moved closer but isnt too far from my old home) I know do Linehaul. I work about the same amount of hours 50-60 a week like I was doing p/d. I make about 100-200 more and dont work as hard. All drop and hook

But most line haul is at night....not a big deal but i have a wife and 2 youngens that want me home at night. Abf sounds promising but ill loose my 2 weeks vacation and seniority......but they have a pension and no cost benefits.........my long term goal is to be ahead not behind when I retire......in about 32 yrs.

I say Fedex / Upsf because you will have more advancement oppurtunities if one day you decide that you're tired of driving.

Layovers aren't bad at all. Some of the places you will end up with a nice continental breakfast. I made a strong mental note of all the places that made me sick and just bobtail to the closest restaurant (YRC pays per diem). Most carriers don't shoot for driver comfort and more often than not, you will end up with the basics. Clean sheets, your own bathroom, cable/sat TV and if you are lucky, a fridge to recool your ice packs and drinks you brought along. Only thing I dont like about layovers is that half the time I get the exact same mileage from staying away from home for the day. Just my two cents.

Line always pays more than P&D. Less traffic at night too. Plus you don't deal with the customers.

Since Estes (your current company) is 'non-union', and neither Fed-Ex or ABF is either...I don't see much difference in which you choose, because you have no benefits or seniority to roll over.
No, this is not a pro/con Union reply. it is an observation worth mentioning in my opinion.

I agree, YRC has put me on days this week and i HATE IT!!!! Took me two hours to go 72 miles to the rail yard. Normally can do it in just over a hour. YEa YRC did spoil me with the hotels they sent me too. Although some we dont bob-tail too. But we are required to have the nice hotel. with plenty of options for food. I wish they would let us bob-tail at this one terminal. When I came in the next day the city driver was trying to take my truck and was arguing me about giving it back. It was the onlu road unit there, he refuses to drive his city unit for whatever reason. I finally got it back but he was all pissy and stuff.

JD7Ncoke yes most linehaul is at night you are right about that. You will make more money but be away from your family. Dont know where you live but if its fairly cheap to live you will be ok doing P/D plus not sure what your wife does. When I was a peddle driver at my first terminal at YRC I was the only one who lived in the county as it is the most expensive county in the country with taxes. I couldnt ever buy a house there. ONce I transferred, started line haul I was able to get a good apt, very very cheap, and the cost of living is very cheap. Houses here are half the money as they are 60 miles south to where I was. Yea Im living on my own now(was still at home last year) and still able to save money. I like the nights though because my gf works nights as well so it works out for the two of us, now they have me running days the only time we see each other is just a quick hi.

@White Dog ABF is a 100% union. Dont know where you got that from that they arent union. UPSF isnt a 100% yet

    You are correct sir.
My mistake. I typed in "Is ABF Union" into my search engine and read a title that said they no longer were....and that is all the further I read. By asking the same question (after reading your reply), I actually spent a few minutes to read things. LOL! Sorry....jumped the gun and ended up in the mud. Thanks for the correction.
