Spare bed & shelving/storage

    SNI has me sitting pretty with an '02 Columbia with one bunk. For anyone who has a Columbia, you know it's kind of a tight squeeze for just one.

    So here's a two-fer for everyone.

    Im set in the next month to start carrying one passenger. (Yes! Minimized late night bordom! ...wait, TWO PEOPLE cramped into that space?)

    Ive got no shelving in my rig, there's space for it and the compartments are there, but right now it's just empty space. The other thing is, I love my family, but I don't want them twin-bed-close! So, what do you all suggest?

    And now that the first part is asked, what do you do to maximized your tiny space?

    I suggest talking to your company before making any kind of enhancements to the trk.

    Dang Vilhiem!

    I just threw away a complete upper bunk for a Columbia...
    Took it out so I could mount my big screen on the wall.....lol!

    I know those trucks are tight on room....never really cared for mine just running solo.

    Thought my old ProStar was small until I drove a Columbia.

    You're right, I did forget to mention that. I can't make any alterations to it and I already did ask for some suggestions from a few other company drivers.

    ...most of their shelving issues were resolved by grabbing shelves from another rig that wasn't in use at the time. As for a spare bed, plywood stretched across the front seats.


    Dang! Haha! Thing is, mine doesn't have overhead space for a spare bunk that way anyways. Plus, I can't make alterations to the rig. Company driver. My fault for failing to mention that.

    I do like how the Columbia drives though. So far, driven a newer prostar, cascadia, cascadia evolution and I *think* a Coronado. I like the Columbia the best drive-wise.

    They said they wouldnt even order shelves if I paid for them. (Figure if I'm paying for them, I'll take them with me from company to company or truck to truck.)

    ...this still doesn't help the second part. Haha! Nobody has said anything about how they best use their space. I don't want to be a complete hog of knowledge.

    Your problem is you are letting SNI abuse you. You need to refuse a second driver until they assign you a two person truck. Only having one bed and two people is unacceptable. I'm sure some people here will help with tips but until you get a two person (bed) truck nothing you do will make it worth a ####.

    Sni isn't giving him another driver. Op wants a family or friend for ride along. I suggest trip planning for hotels? Unless that passenger planning on staying there for awhile...

    Um. Please read the original post. Not a second driver, I'm not going to team. Period. No, this is family.

    I had thought about hotels, buts that's a bloody headache. TS are easy enough to find and free. It's a good idea, don't get me wrong. I'd rather stash a piece of plywood under my bunk and sleep on that. (Southern hospitality says the guest gets the bed. Haha!)

    Take your plywood, get some 2x4s and a screw gun, and make a bed frame. Put 2x4 pillars in all 4 corners of the sleeper, and brace them off on the ends. You're not screwing into the interior of the truck, you are just screwing into the 2x4s. Put a mattress on top and you have your top bunk.
