How far back does one have to go to find an engine with no speed governor? Which models for which manufacturer?
Looking for another truck and really like the old school look and feel.

Thanks in advance for the info

I think you mean mechanical engines in which there is no ecm, and no typical way to program in a speed limiter.

    Cummins, I'm not sure.

Detroit, you would have to go back to the 2 stroke 8V92 I think, so late 80s maybe?

Cat made mechanical C models into the mid 90s I believe.

ECM’s have always limited road speed and RPM. Just a matter of where the top is. Most are only programmable to a certain speed, say 120 or 125mph max cruise or road speed. Engine RPM is limited to protect the engine.

Is there really ever a need to go faster that that?

I believe that 70-75 is plenty fast in a truck.

No, but the issue is having everybody bunched at 65, which is the likely speed if the FMCSA moves forward with speed limiters.

    Right lane 55?

Wouldn’t be struggling to pass anyone then and good fuel mileage to boot?

They had governors on mechanical engines. Road speed limiters.
