IMG_3888.JPG I normally just carry some military grade pepper spray with me that I "acquired" from an armory. If it were legal, or if I had the cajones and didn't care about getting caught or going to jail, I'd carry my little friend, S&W 500 magnum. It only has a maximum effective range of about ten feet, but would knock a fully loaded semi over with ease.

I keep like 2 cans of bear spray in my truck, which is basically a milder form of pepper spray. Company issued and as far as I know its legal here. I wouldn't hesitated to use it on a tweaker if I had to lol.

It IS legal and depending on what state your permit is from, you can carry in most all except the commie states.

Absolutely do not enter New York, Pennsylvania (if they don't recognize your state... felony), Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and especially New Jersey with a gun of any sort.

It goes without saying... don't take guns to Canada either.

In commie states you can follow FOPA

    "
FEDERAL LAW ON TRANSPORTATION OF FIREARMS
A provision of the federal law known as the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act, or FOPA, protects those who are transporting firearms for lawful purposes from local restrictions which would otherwise prohibit passage.

Under FOPA, notwithstanding any state or local law, a person is entitled to transport a firearm from any place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry it, if the firearm is unloaded and locked out of reach. In vehicles without a trunk, the unloaded firearm must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. Ammunition that is either locked out of reach in the trunk or in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console is also covered.

Travelers should be aware that some state and local governments treat this federal provision as an “affirmative defense” that may only be raised after an arrest. All travelers in areas with restrictive laws would be well advised to have copies of any applicable firearm licenses or permits, as well as copies or printouts from the relevant jurisdictions’ official publications or websites documenting pertinent provisions of law (including FOPA itself) or reciprocity information. In the event of an unexpected or extended delay, travelers should make every effort not to handle any luggage containing firearms unnecessarily and to secure it in a location where they do not have ready access to it."

Definitely not in New Jersey and I wouldn't do it in New York, either. Most standard semi-auto pistols are banned in both states anyway thanks to ignorant magazine capacity restrictions. New Jersey will toss you in prison for a long time just for possession of hollow points.

The FOPA laws also only address traveling through. You cannot stop for any reason.

Affirmative defense means they can arrest you, throw you in jail and then you get to plead to a judge why FOPA laws apply in your case.

If I were traveling by myself, I might be willing to risk that... but I don't. My dog rides with me and I won't risk her going to the pound while my legal issues got sorted out. I would be absolutely psycho if that happened.

FOPA doesn't say you can't stop.

FPOA can only be used as an affirmative defense after arrest. So the truck is towed, the refer load is rotted, but hey, 2 months later at pretrial I was able to get it dismissed using FPOA. Carrying is up to the individual, just be sure company allows it.
For those who carry, what do you do when you go into Canada?

If you stop somewhere, you better have a pretty good reason why.
