Yes the red or orange thread in the strap.
You would be amazed how many ive scene using a 1/4 of a 4" strap to hold down a load. Bet he was saying " it's only got a little tear, it's a brand new strap"

Always carry extra straps

 

I don’t think the red thread applies to tiedowm straps like lifting straps. Lifting straps only expose the tread when worn out. Those threads in your picture are visible even when new.

 

What’s wrong with these straps

 

Brand new strap with original band on it. I was confused when he said the red thread line

 

The red thread in a tie down strap represents strength of some kind (I’m to lazy to look it up) lifting straps have red yard woven in to indicate wear, if the thread is exposed you’re supposed to take it out of service.

 

Ya i did mix that idea with lifting straps. I did read someplace if your cut on a strap crosses over the "red" or middle of strap. It's considered a faulty strap and must be replaced. I'm going to find it again. It hasn't been that long since I was reading about it.

What makes that winder so much better than the other? I've only used the one that @PoleCrusher has linked....

 

Nothing. Just one is designed to have the straps brought to it, the other to be brought to the straps. Just personal preference.
