Are the pintles on the back of the LTL trailers charged with air? The pintle I had on the back of my log truck had an air chamber attached to it and when you charged the trailer a plunger came out in the pintle hitch and kept the eye tight.

Yeah, that is correct. It would act as a safety measure to keep the eye of the pintle in place (if for some strange reason you halfassed your pretrip and forgot to close the lock on your pintle hook). The main function is to keep it from rocking and knocking back and forth when slowing or speeding up.

Most trailers have them, most trucks do NOT.

I knew most LTL trucks didn't have them, but I wasn't sure about the trailers.

I'm sure without the plunger if it wasn't tight slamming back and forth the bolts on the pintle hooks would eventually give way without a plunger over time. Especially pulling 20k+ pups. Can you say safety chains. Wouldn't ever want to be in that situation.

Safety chains don't do anything aside from make you legal and give you the warm and fuzzies. If the trailers weighs enough and your pintle breaks (or you have some other form of disconnect), the sudden jolt can rip out the safety bar they are attached to. I've seen it before.

Wasn't told to retrieve it. I did volunteer but decided to not grab it since I did not have a heavy trailer to backtrack where I dumped my empty.

    Shaggy Thanks this.

That's what I meant. Safety chains do nothing. You'll watch your pup flip over or go ghost riding. That's why you make sure that bad boy (plunger) locks.

Sorry to bump this, but we got a new Freightshaker at our terminal in the last month. On a fancy plate, above the pintel hook, is a weight rating! Must of heard you asking this question lol. I wanted to grab a pic of it, but oh well, too lazy and it's a 3 day weekend.

Weight rating on the pintel hook is 3999 lbs. So, that answers that!

Happy 4th of July everyone :occasion5:
