@XenonOxide -- Another option, you might want to consider (before leaving Swift entirely): At 6 months in -- you may in fact be at a point where you can "have your cake and eat it, too"..... What do I mean by that? "Quit your current job -- without quitting your current job." If you are unhappy/miserable where you are currently at -- before leaving Swift entirely -- I would encourage you to look around at other options within Swift to which you may be able to transfer, with 6 months experience. Swift has multiple forms of freight -- so before leaving, can you possibly transfer to: A dedicated account (with either refer, or dry van)? I routinely see Swift trucks pulling loads for Walmart. I never had a bad experience when delivering to WallyWorld. Although their flatbed group is small -- that experience (if you could get in) would indeed jazz up your cdl resume. If you can back up a spread-axle skateboard, you can pretty much back up anything else. I don't remember your exact home/terminal location--but you might also check into moving over to Swift's intermodal group. Intermodal -- "Where the rubber meets the rail". Been there, done that. It's good experience. FYI -- I didn't just talk the above talk -- I also walked the walk. The above is exactly what I did, previously. After 6 months with OTR at Schneider, I wasn't happy with the way things were going with dispatch, etc. So--rather than quit outright--I switched over to intermodal--and stayed there for over another year. In hindsight--I'm sure glad I did....future employers (the good ones) do respect solid tenure. -- Lual
Can you get yourself on a dedicated account? I started at Swift on OTR Reefer out of JV. Freight was definitely better then (two years ago). I was averaging $1650 a week, but I was staying out 30 days at a time. I got tired of that after 3 months, and started asking about dedicated runs, which I finished out my time there doing. Call retention and see what they have. Honestly, unless it’s for a similar job, the job market isn’t great right now, and if you’re an auto-restricted, no endorsements or TWIC driver with less than a year, your options are just more megacarrier ########. Get a year in if you can, and things open up. Use your down time to knock out the pre-reqs for hazmat, and go get that taken care of. I used my year at Swift to advance my career. Anytime I was sitting, I was taking practice tests and calling around trying to work out getting rid of the restriction. It paid off. I run linehaul at Old Dominion now. Home every day, weekends and holidays off (unless I want double-time), making more than anyone out for days and days at a time. Grind it out, and good things will happen.
