Alright all I need help. My mentor is crazy and reckless. He also has 500,000 miles under his belt as a company driver for swift and I'm not sure I'll be taken seriously by Swift. I'm off off his truck now and am waiting for a new mentor but I believe this man to be a menace. ANY help or advice that y'all can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Below are my concerns and reasons why I can no longer be paired with my mentor. While he is mostly nice, he has sudden and extreme mood swings that make working with him very difficult.
For starters, he's been my mentor for 5 days. He hasn't showered or changed his clothes in 5 days. He refuses to allow me to stop for a shower either. Hygiene is part of the swift policy.
Everyday occurrence During first 50 hours:
Mentor sits/lays on back bunk for majority of time while student is driving. Mentor walks around inside cab while vehicle is in motion. Does not uses seat belt or safety equipment. Mentor has been asked repeatedly by student to use safety equipment while student is driving. Mentor refuses. Student is liable for mentors actions while student is driving vehicle. Student does not wish to receive a traffic ticket.
Mentor uses phone and headphones while student is driving. During the probationary first 50 hours this is against the Mentor rules.
Inside of cab is full of unsecured projectiles. Mentor will not allow student to secure belongings in cab.
While sitting on bottom bunk Mentor frequently yells at student over politics or criticism of students personal life while student is driving. Creating a hostile work environment and overly stressful driving situations.
Despite being asked not to, mentor frequently makes changes to students logs. Mentor refuses to teach student Qualcomm and does it for the student. Student has informed mentor that those are legal documents and what the mentor is doing is a crime. Mentor is on video saying "I don't give a ####. I'll do with your logs as I like".
Safety concerns:
3/27: Approximately 7:00 am local: Mentor moved vehicle while student was asleep and unsecured on top bunk.
Approximately 8:00 pm local: Mentor told student to drive 4-5 mph over speed limit. Student refused. Mentor said that the cops wouldn't care and Student should do it anyway. Student refused.
3/29: Approximately 4:00 pm: Mentor instructed student to stop on train tracks while waiting for red light. Student refused to move onto tracks until cars at intersection had moved and there was room to fit the semi on the other side of tracks. Mentor insisted. Student refused.
Approximately 8:00 pm local. Mentor instructed student to park in a no parking zone. Student asked 3 times to park elsewhere. There was legal parking 400 feet away. Mentor refused. Law enforcement arrived and gave level 3 vehicle inspection and warning.
3/30: Approximately 7:30 am local: Mentor told student to follow truck into intersection to make left turn. Truck was blocking sight of traffic light (which was red). Student refused to enter intersection illegally. Mentor said student should follow directions and not question him any further on safe conduct of vehicle.
Approximately 3:30 local: While driving, mentor FaceTimed unknown person for two hours and cussed about the "pinche gringo" in his truck.
Mentor threatened to make false report on student and get him fired from swift if student reported his safety concerns. Mentor claims he felt threatened by student. Student never got within 3 feet of mentor due to odor.

3rd sentence summed it up.
Has 500,000 with a known bad actor in the industry.
I never understand why folks rack up 2 million miles with training megas.
Glad you’re off the truck!
Hand in your documented fun to safety - better luck with the next ‘mentor ‘ they give you.
All your concerns are valid, and the guy represents the bane of the industry today.Texas_hwy_287, speedyk and Fling1995 Thank this. -
Glad you're off his truck hopefully as you have documented in this post you also sent these concerns to your driver manager and this piece of crap won't be training anymore! Good luck!

Next time a mentor is telling you wrong #### on a Swift truck just push the drive cam button and it record what he is saying. Boom proof for you.

One word. Out.
You are already out.
Just about all of those problems listed in the OP post would have raised a storm on my end. The final maginot line would have been my logs. No one touches those #### things. And everything will be secured in that cab, get me to Oklahoma towards Liberal and I'll shake it all down to the floor. Bet you. If they havent paved some of those roads and bad bridges yet. I can go on but there is no need.
Document everything. Names, dates, times and whatsist. Write on paper. Save it.
Tis a shame you did not get that on video or audio. Swift would have liked that.
That's not a trainer. 500,00 aint nothing. Maybe 4 years worth solo. We burn through that in two years as a team actually less.
For every thing listed shows me that you are going to be a hell of a driver someday. Do not forget that. Believe it or not, alot of it is going to serve you well.Fling1995 Thanks this. -
