Here's a question. Is there a quick and easy way to search for local terminals? I haven't even started school yet but I put in some research time regularly. I don't want to be forced into making a snap decision when those companies start coming into my school to recruit. At this point I have no idea if I want to go OTR for as long as possible just to get the time and miles in or I want to try and get in with something local or regional right off the bat. I do know I want to pay off my school loans quickly and not disappear for weeks at a time. The wife won't be down with that.

I've been with USX for 6 years. Last year I got home all 52 weekends and I only missed 1 this year. I make enough to keep my family in a safe neighborhood and driving a new enough car that they're unlikely to end up stranded while I'm out of town. If they have a dedicated account available in your area you can do well. If you go OTR, your paychecks and home time will both suffer.

I live in the Central Valley as well, Stockton. I applied to all the companies who sent recruiters to my school, and to Swift and CR England as well to my school's consternation. The Swift terminal is only 14 miles from my house. If you can find a company with a nearby close terminal it can really help you get through the house more often.
I don't have a recommendation on which company to choose, I have only been with one trucking company, Swift for 2.5 years. My thoughts are that they all pay the same wages to the drivers within a few pennies difference and pretty much treat the drivers like mindless robots intersprinkled with driver appreciation events every so often where they give away little trinket belt buckles and tshirts and hot dogs. -
a lot of weeks,u will not make $700 on the road, get out of trucking.

If you can't make 700 a week you need to figure out why and make a change. It's been a long time since I averaged anything under 1000 and that's rounding low. If your willing to work hard there is money to be made.

Who are you working for if we can know? i am looking for a company that i am able to make 1000-1200 a week at least, i dont have to come home that often, once every 80-90 days will do.

US Xpress. I'm on the Dollar General account. It's a physical job but I'm home every weekend and 1000-1200 is very achievable.

Watkins and Shepard is 10 days of orientation and your on your own. I went through swifts training they take advantage of you don't pay you what they say you will be paid per week us express is a great company to start with.

Talked to the recruiter from us xpress this morning. Everything was sounding good till he said after going with a trainer i would have to drive team and couldn't even tell me what the beginning pay scale is. Sorry but teaming with a person you don't know right away could be a bad fit. I did like the fact that i would be running the western states though
