After talking with a lot of O/Os, I've come to the conclusion that unless you're a pretty good mechanic or running team with your wife, it gives you very little benefit except a bit more freedom at the cost of an enormous financial exposure. You top out at about 80-85k a year as a company driver industry wide You'd be hard pressed to beat that as an O/O.

Stay as company driver. You said it yourself, you need to be babysat so System company driver is for you.
ramblingman Thanks this. -
I do agree that their is no benefit to you to be an owner operator though. You need a type A mentality. If your happy as a company driver you won't be successful as an business owner. My lack of control over my life, work and income pissed me off. I always strived for more control and therefore opportunity. I succeed as an owner operator for all the reasons I was miserable as a company driver.floydguitarist, mitmaks and Sneakerfix Thank this. -
Anyone here drive the Texas regional route?
I'm likely going to System and want to hear a few things from the drivers instead of a recruiter.
-How is training for an experienced driver who has never done flatbed?
-What does your gross weekly pay look like? $60k+ a year sounds nice, but I don't know if that's realistic
-What does weekly home time mean? Just home for your 34hr?
-How does routing and fuel stops work? Is every load route and fuel stop planned out for you?
-What's the equipment like? Do all trucks have APUs? What about inverters?
Thanks for any info guys! -
Hey drivers,
I'm looking into system and I'm pretty excited from what I read. Sounds like a very good company to work for.
I've applied for Texas regional and have a few questions that I hope you guys can answer for me;
1) What is training like for an experienced driver who's never done flatbed? This was the only thing the recruiter was kinda iffy on. She said "a few days"
Anywhere from a 1 week to 2 weeks to learn securement from what I've seen. Also matters on how you did on the road test
2) Is the pay information on the site accurate? I see that the top 50% of drivers in each division are earning $60k a year, but I'd like to hear it from you guys.
The CPM is accurate.
3) How does home weekly work out? Does that really just mean "home for your reset"?
I'm pretty sure that what it means
4) How are the trucks? I was told APUs and power inverters are included in all trucks, is this accurate?
Trucks are pretty new some are being replaced with new petes all have APUs and inverters some with a fridge.
5) What kind of runs do you normally get running Texas regional? Lots of short stuff and state highway driving?
The recruiter should have sent you a email with all the states you'll cover
Thanks for any info you guys can give me. I've got some experience under my belt and I'm ready to find a solid company that I can build a long term career with. System sounds very promising. -
Joining in a bit late here but I'll post about my experience as a company driver since January 2015:
I talked with Roxy as my recruiter (out of Montana and was recruited for the "rail" fleet) and went through orientation the second week of January. Everyone there was super nice to me, especially Jerry. I was linked up with a company driver heading back to French Camp, CA at the end and had the great opportunity of getting the chance to pick his brains over two days on how the company works and how he has been treated. From what he told me I felt NO fear about the decison I had made.
My trainer was SUPERB and had nothing but laughs and learning over the next 4 weeks with him. When all was said and done I walked away with a passing score of 92% (road test, practical securement, and written exam) which helped my trainer net a nice $500 bonus, and me a free lunch next time we met up. Even though my trainer had a stroke and had to quit I still keep in contact with him and get advice from him.
THE PAY
I am on a sliding scale and average about 51.5 CPM (1 yr previous driving and being on the rail fleet out of Bloomington) and tend to average about $950 a week. Sometimes more and sometimes less. There was recently a shakeup by the owner and it seems that the CalRegional has gone by the wayside and become the Southwest Regional (CA, NV, and AZ) so there had been way more opportunity at loads and miles which has been NO complaints on my behalf.
THE COMPANY
I feel like the company does care, from Spokane personnel down to my driver manager. I have been able to openly and anonomysly been able to speak with many different people within the company about my concerns and felt NO reprocussions for expressing what I see as wrong. I have been offered up explanations I did not agree with but was told that if anything went wrong in whatever I expressed I would not be held accountable and have not when they did.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS
The owner of the company does care about his drivers and if pushed far enough drivers have the outlet (Bobbi Reisenheur) to make their concerns known and be addressed VERY quickly. With, unfortunately an accident and two incidents under my belt with System, I really don't fear a firing but instead expect coaching and help from a group of people that want to try and create the best work environment for the best drivers possible.Truck Nasty and Sneakerfix Thank this. -
Southwest Regional My ### lol I've been to WA twice and Montana this month not complaining good miles but not southwest
-
Hey Sneaker are you/were you supposed to be a CalRegional driver? Just curious, not angry or trying to flame you.
-
Did you guys get to keep your weekends off? -
Sort of. Much like I was told by the former TM Ray out of French Camp either get I in on Friday leave on Sunday or get in on Saturday and leave on Monday, so I get about a day and a half off on the weekends. Who is your DM?
