Tried to tell ya. There are a lot of things I don't know, but 12.7s are one thing I'm good with. After a dozen in frames and a half dozen complete rebuild tear downs to the bare block you learn a thing or two.

F1F6FB5F-B115-4694-B9FA-72E21F36CDCF.jpeg I’m still learning. Today I watched my counterbores being cut, and inserts installed. It was very cool, made my day.

How much did they have to shave off?
Did they fit the new liners first and check the height with a sled gauge? A lot of guys just cut them and dont even check to set if they need it.

While it's apart I highly recommend pulling the oil cooler and putting new o rings in. Easy to get to right now with the turbo out of the way. Pia when the engine is assembled.

It’s not that hard, I did the seals a few yrs. back. Didn’t crack the box open. I’ll probably do that myself this summer, though.

3 of them needed it, and 2 of them had inserts from the last overhaul. The inserts are 30 thousandths. I guarantee they’re done right, and I got the friends and family discount to boot.We also did the inner cover, and set bull gear, and other gears in today, That also was very interesting, Much easier than the manual makes it seem. I’m sure glad I didn’t attempt to do it myself though. I’m very lucky to get the chance to learn on my own engine, I want it done right, it’s my only and last Truck. A few more things after this job, and it’s done. For a while anyways.

Update. The engine has been running well. Had the oil changed at about 5k miles post-rebuild.

Unfortunately, it seems that the tech overtorqued the oil pan drain plug, and cracked the seal between the oil pan and the insert with the drain plug in it. Losing enough oil every night to put a fresh 2" oil puddle under the oil pan plug. That's a tiny volume though. After a couple weeks, I still haven't needed to add any oil at all.

Still, in mid February, when the next home time rolls around, I will have another oil change done, and get that seal replaced while they are at it.

Update. The truck developed an air leak yesterday. One of the air bags. Having it replaced now.

Get an EZ drain valve or fumoto valve and you'll never have that problem again

Nice to have but if something hit's it and breaks. There goes your oil and your motor.

    Seen it happen twice.
