When you consider that a decent set of tarps is 1000 bucks or more counting lumber and steel tarps, and a lot of driver are too lazy to use padding to protect the tarps from damage and destroy them in less than a year, it's easy to see why a company is reluctant to share a larger percentage of the tarp pay they collect. If I had 50 trucks and have to buy 60 sets of tarps a year, I'd be a tightwad with tarping pay too. Tarping isn't that hard. I've been doing it for years. The odd thing about tarping is it is actually easier to do right and pretty than it is to do sloppily and ugly. If ya don't want to tarp, and tarp right, most van companies I'll hire ya!
Tarping sucks!

Its spelled 'Whine' and who are you kidding? You were on my case ever since I registered here. Well,.. maybe not that long. But seems like it. LOL
Also, I think there is a statue of limitations on reporting old posts. If not, I'm going to submit an amendment.
As for supporting you guys,.. I do. This post in general should be an example of that. Do we really want steering wheel holders who are too lazy to stop and check their load coming to flatbed? Drivers who think flatbed pays so much more than Van or Reefer, and using that as their sole reason to come to flatbed?
If I am not, then I am a PM away from listening to your gripes and I will honestly try to be more amicable. Within reason,...

I always thought the biggest benefit to flatbedding was you didn't have to spend as much time around van/reefer drivers....
MrEd and Skate-Board Thank this. -

As long as you're being compensated fairly then I agree
Maybe you could ask the drivers if they'd like to buy their own tarp and receive the full tarp pay? I run reefer right now and told the boss flat out "I'll buy a pallet jack tomorrow if I can get what the lumpers are charging." They thought I was joking. They regularly pay lumpers $260 to unload a truck. I could do it in half the time as them as well. My point is if there's no motivation for an employee to do it then there's a good chance they won't.Mr.X Thanks this. -
What? So a driver is supposed to loan the company money and work for free? I don't remember ever paying for something out of pocket or working for free. I'll charge the company what the shop charges. $60/hr seems like a fair rate for a diesel mechanic (on the cheap side really). So why is it OK to pay the shop $60-120/hr but not the driver?

I tarp for $35-thats tarp and untarp. Company is stingy. I know o/o get paid $100. Trying to save and buy my own truck-Im just tired working for peanuts

They forget so quickly don't they. I have had to talk to the boss three weeks in a row to get reimbursed for tolls. Said never again. Now I just call them from the toll booth " I don't have any cash so you'll have to pay online " they always had a big attitude like its my job to pay tolls. Nope not going to happen. Never again. I don't care if the truck needs a tire air valve for $.25 I'll wait for the service truck to come out and fix it. No one appreciates your extra work and they forget about it within a week.Last edited: Dec 16, 2015

So what did three days of tarping pay if you don't mind me asking?

Find a company that appreciates it. It's not that difficult.
