It seems life is but a dream these days. A dream of freedom and free time to enjoy this beautiful planet we have been given permission to live on. I see talks everyday of computer this, robot that and anything and everything to make our lives more easy, like ELD's. Personally I don't want easy, I like to work for my things and that sometimes means using a hand saw instead of a power saw. I don't need or want easy or helpful in my life. For me, things like ELD's hinder my day to day. Yeah sure, I can adjust and adapt with not much problem but, for me it isn't about that so much. as it is about just not being necessary. There are only a handful of real "cheater's" out there on the road these days and the rest of us do just fine. This ELD mandate is just not needed and will cost money that needs not be spent. I am talking about LE as well as truckers. This argument can be spun everywhichaway but the truth is the truth, we just don't need them.

Penske and ryder wanted a blanket exemption but they didn't get it. The feds said they don't have to have elds in there rental trucks for rentals up to 8 days a month. Any more days than that have to comply with the mandate.

Maybe it's time for good ole trucker strike. Let the shelves get empty, fuel tanks at gas stations run dry, no turkeys the holiday etc. Because these government officials have to much power to dictate something they have never even done. Let them sit behind the wheel, and deal with these shippers and brokers to really see how hard it is to get their tomatoes, toilet paper, Christmas gifts, etc. Then see how you get the attention of your lawmakers. But the issue will be these morons that drive for big companies that are worried about getting their .42 cent a mile. You see how the 1982 strike got thier attention. Its time to rise up. Or better yet drive 200,000 trucks with trailers to Capital Hill and shut down DC. They can't tow everybody away.

Good luck with that. You can't get 2 truck drivers to agree on a tv channel, getting them to organize would be just short of herding cats. The real issue is not the ELDs anyway, it's the HOS. All the fighting about ELDs just says I don't like them because I can't cheat. They're just the method of recording. The place we need flexibility is actually the hours of service rules.

Uh, no. That's a cop-out, its a lazy and weak rebuttal and its dismissive of real and genuine concerns about the 'Internet of things' that are an irreversible part of our lives now and the role of technology (and those who would disrupt it) in the world today. Cheating is an issue but its far from the only one and distilling the debate to that singular point makes you look pretty uneducated.

I've listed several valid reasons on these forums before but instead of reiterating those, here's a new one! Hacking has been mentioned and is usually dismissed as crazy talk, but not only are there zero regulations concerning security measures on these things, or... you know... actual security, the ATA is now admitting its a potential problem. Enough of a problem for them to profit off it anyway.

They will soon be rolling out a vehicle cyber security threat reporting system. It does absolutely nothing in the way of security but for the yet-to-be-determined price of more of your money, it will let you and respective officials know that you've been hacked. You know... after its already happened. Can't put a price on safety! Or any security features on your fancy clock
