Co-driver saw the dog. Sitting on the side of the road staring at him. He made eye contact with it and it watched him go by. He looked in his mirror and it was gone. Gave him the heebie-jeebies and he swears it had a sinister grin on its face. I've never seen the dog, but like others, I've seen curves where the road was straight, people running past the truck doing 70+mph, overpasses that don't exist. Usually a dark road with no other traffic. When looking through the windshield looks like I'm looking through water, I know I need to pull over and take a break. Problem is, it is so hard to find a place to pull over at night -- rest areas are nearly impossible to negotiate -- had to wake drivers up to move so I could get out because they had the exit blocked -- all the wide spots are double parked and the exit/entrance ramps are jam packed. I find a spot with as wide a shoulder as I can, put my 4 ways on and just get out of the drivers seat for a few minutes -- get a fresh soda, something to munch on or just sit and stretch for a few and snuggle with the real black dog on the truck. It is amazing how much this helps -- best cure for highway hypnosis I've found. Never seen the dog myself, but haven't been on the road a real long time -- figure with all the other things I've seen it's just a matter of time.

I have seen the black dog! Last night, in fact. I woke up & discovered my St. Bernard had climbed onto the bed & promptly taken over most of it, giving me about 18" of mattress as he snored like an out-of-tune powerboat a foot from me.

Hey--all dogs are black in the dark, right? :D

I'll try to keep it short.

It was a very dark night, black in fact, no moon. The hiway was also a black top, fairly new, very smooth and black, the kind of road that dissappears at the edge. I was the only one on the road.

Now in slow motion: out of the dark night into my headlights, on the right side of the road with just its right feet on the pavement I saw coming at me, first just a grey thing, which changed as it came into the trunk of a big elephant, swinging from side to side as it ran. Then came into view the rest of it, head and horns wagging as it ran -- wooo, horns? yeah, the elephant turned into a huge, though a lot smaller, black bull with really long horns.

    True story. No Bull.

I've never seen the Dog but had many hallucinations drivin thru the night.
I've always known when it's time to give it up for the day. But not long ago I was pushin myself doin 16 to 18 hour - 700 to 900 miles a day for a month straight. Sleep deprivation will eventually catch up to ya. Was crossing Wyoming and knew I was gettin tired when I caught myself doing 35 in the 70 MPH zone. Figured I could make another 100 before I shut down but only went about 20 and the lights went out. No not the truck lights but my eyesight. Yea the lights were on but nobody was at home. That was the scariest incident I've ever had in truckin. Every thing just went black like I had been semi knocked out. Remember hangin on the wheel tryin to make myself come back thru, tryin to remember if the road was straight and listening to the jake scream. I knew not to panic and just came down on the binders easy and held the wheel straight. All the time I was aware of my actions but just couldn't see. When I finally got stopped I was in the middle of both lanes. Thank God nothin happened that night cause it could of been serious. Lesson learned-Know when enough is enough!

Well, all I can say about the thousand miles is that it was pretty common stuff "back in the day". I wouldn't even think about attempting it now - no desire to and it's pretty dangerous.
Never saw the black dog, instead, I saw a giant oak tree planted squarely in the middle of the asphalt on eastbound I-10 in the middle of the Texas desert somewhere. It was as real as anything else in front of your eyes - I blinked, still there, blinked again, and getting closer, still there, blinked at third time and ready to shut the truck down - it finally disappeared.
I decided I probably should pull over and go to sleep for a while....

I drove at night and I think it's always a little more eerie during that time anyway.

I have seen some weird things myself.

Hit a couple of deer too. I hate it when they come out from the dark running and run right into your truck!:biggrin_25524:
