Been meaning to post this awhile. I'm really curious how much RPM abuse I should throw at my D13.
Having driven Detroits and Cummins before this truck (2015 780) I'm blown away by how weak the engine brake is. I know how to use it, with the 1/2/3/max settings or just engaging the downhill cruise but it doesn't ever seem happy, it's either way too little or too much at way too high RPM's.
I-shift hardly ever lets my truck see over about 1600 RPMs but to get any engine braking at all on this motor with a heavy load you have to bump it to 3 or max and it shoots the RPMs up to 2100 and sounds like it's going to explode. I hate doing this. Is it ok for this motor? It just doesn't make sense to me becuase you never want to run a big diesel up to nearly 2k RPMs but in engine brake on these it seems like you have to.

86scotty and Newto Trucking Thank this.

Just seems way too high for a diesel but I guess I’ll get used to it.

I usually like;
#1 60% area
#2 85%
#3 100%
(A) Mode 85%
They are most effective 1300-1800rpm .....if you have noticed higher RPM they don't work very good and lose strength above 1800 -
(Identical engines except for plastic badges and final paint color)
The Mack powertrain is awesome in Volvo trucks -
