Your not supposed to check it with the engine running as you have in the vid.

Youre looking for play in the steering input shaft slip spline and ujoints, and the draglink and tie rod ends. It kinda takes a helper to do the tie rod ends.. One to rock and one to look at the joint. Put on a glove and yank around.. You shouldnt be able to wiggle em. A prybar is helpful too. Kingpins and wheelbearings youd need to jack the front up to check.

What does it do with the engine off? Same amount of play, or much less?

Same amount of play, but you are actually turning your tires when using the power steerring instead of just moving the slack.
You can actually do the same thing even with the engine dead, that is why you need to visually look and see when the pitman arm moves just a fraction while you are turning the shaft, and not just go by feel.

DOT pop me for OOS when i moved the big steering wheel on my 1977 3408 K 1oo the pitman arm had a tiny bit of wiggle on the steering box arm, he was calling his road call man saying it was more $ after 3am, I told him I had tools to fix it an put my winch bar on end of 1/2in drive breaker bar and it moved a small turn making bolt snapping sounds till it stopped any play, dot walked over after he putt 2 more trucks out for 8 hours sleeper time, that was all driver had to rest back then, and he watched for no more slop and signed me repaired and ready to go but said if i did not have a muffler on it next time i came thru he might fill out another paper on my old truck?

2" of 'play' in a 20" steering wheel. That's a LOT. Right now, my 08 has about 1" with engine off but I just recently had it aligned.
