The journey begins - purchased a truck.

You can pick through this thread here if you like, I posted lots of numbers. Real numbers, so you can see what the goal was, how the posts shift - and what reality became.

    Good luck.

The 12.7 is a good motor. If you buy a 2007 it would have been a glider, in 2007 the 14L with egr was being built. I think your choice is a good one as you will be exempt from an ELD

The 14L with EGR was still a Series 60 and it was built way back from about 2002 or 2003 until the DDEC 6? Series 60, which had the DPF.

Thanks been reading through the thread. So far I think my thinking is good.

For me it’s not about revenue it’s more about expenses and keeping expenses down as much as possible. And also coming in this way is the lowest risk possible. I’ll keep reading and I’ll ask either there or here if I need too!

    Thanks!

Legally you cannot put an older engine into a newer truck. It has to be the same year engine. And yes, perhaps so shade tree mechanic would do it, but the first time you go into a reputable shop, they should refuse to touch it.

Costs and maintenance in the trucking business for me is the most important aspect. Revenue will come but keeping costs and maintenance down you get to keep all of it.

The thing that costs the most is fuel. The only way you can keep that cost down is MPG. Now driving other people’s trucks I didn’t care about that but buying my own truck MPG and tracking it would be a high priority besides regular maintenance.

What’s the best means to get the best MPG you can get out of an older truck? Keeping the RPM at the speed it’s suppose too?

    What’s the sweet spot with a Detroit series 60 about 2000 - 2004?

First 14l series 60 was 98/99. 04-09 no Bueno. Reason I say 04, because alot, and I mean alot of up entill 03 had a pre 01 motors installed. Customers were pre ordering engines. Tons of 03 trucks with older engines.
