That's actually been discussed at length here. There are no special markers in the VIN.

I didn't say so at all I didn't even contribute to that conversation. All I can do is read what the people who own the gliders wrote

glider titles have “GL”, just because they took an emissions engine out and put an old emissions engine in does not make it a glider, gliders are sold with atleast two missing drive train components so that if you say just I framed a motor but wreck the truck, you can swap the engine over, up until 2020 the glider assembly was able to get by with just meeting engine build year emissions, now they must meet model year emissions anyways, so you cannot even get by with that any more.

    AModelCat Thanks this.

I think you’re on the right track approximately with your thinking except for fuel mileage. Depending what you pull you’ll never get 7 mpg. I had a 06 Freightliner Century 14 liter Detroit pulling a wood chip wagon locally and made 4.3 mpg. I have a 17 Cascadia now doing same thing and make 5.3. All depends what you pull and the terrain for fuel mileage. Unless your on flat ground with and empty flat bed you won’t touch 7 mpg though. I’d say MAYBE 5.5.

Ok thanks. I’m under the impression I might be able to get 7 but I hear what you’re saying. There’s a big difference between 7 and 5-5.5. Which is about 110 gallons a week based on 100k miles a year.

Others might tell you differently, but my 17 has a lifetime of 7.5 pulling a tanker cross country. Now I’m getting 5.3. All depends what you do, but a pre emission isn’t going to hit 7 I doubt.

The older Paccar gliders ended in "G" if it was a glider.

I remember thumbing through a few 4900 Western Star shop manuals years ago and there was a page for decoding the VIN. As I recall there was mention of at least 1 digit that denoted a glider.

On the Paccar, no. Just 7 digits.

Western Star was the full 17 digits though.
