    .

When 1st started driving I drove a 13 letter #### spreader cabover., most trks were co except OOs. I never really gave it much thought until a driver died 4 trks from me in a cabover. Fireman said the fire started under the dog house & he never had a chance. My next stop was at a WalMart where I bought a Carbon monoxide
& smoke detector. I sent the receipt to payroll for reimbursement. The pos co. I was driving for to get my 1 yr otr experience refused to reimburse me, said it wasn't required equipment & I didn't call payroll1st to get a po number. I delivered near the terminal so after delivery I went to the terminal to speak with the safety manager he seemed to be pro-driver the few times I spoke to him. He said this issue has come up before, manager wouldnt budge on this issue. Safety mgr was keeping a low profile cuz he retired in 2 yrs. I told him the driver that burnt in a trk fire "blood was on his hands" I called OT about this & they said "they would look into it".
I had a week left to get 1 yr otr experience. I requested to be kept within 200 miles of home. On the 8th day I drove into the terminal said I was giving my 2 week notice & got my #### out of the 13LSS & never looked back. I went to CFI I drove 22 yrs there with my CO2& smoke detectors in the sleeper.

Is a CO2 detector enough or do I need a smoke detector also?
I got my CO2 detector after my sons Peterbilt caught on fire which they’re really bad about down by the starter !
Also I was curious at how bad the air gets in some of these truck stops with all the idling .

This time of year it's ok to shut the truck off, fire up your kerosene heater in the sleeper and close the curtain . You can stay toasty

    FlaSwampRat Thanks this.

I have never had either, other than the fire extinguisher and when I ran otr I had one in the sleeper too.
I have never slept without a window partially open either though, I don't know if that makes much difference.
I do know that something will eventually kill me, and the percentage of drivers that have burn't to death while sleeping has got to be so low that it is not even something I will think much about one way or other.
I have no way of proving it, but I bet over the years more drivers have frozen to death sleeping than been killed by fire.

Some of those new trucks with no sleeper doors are crazy. Lot more truck fires since emission systems on trucks. Some burning others at truck stops or company yards.

My truck caught on fire once with engine shut off. I was inside the truck stop. Happened in the early 90s when drivers cared about others. Someone popped the hood and put it out with his fire extinguisher. Had a 88 Pete with 3406B. The starter solenoid started it.
Thank god I wasn’t at a rest area sleeping.
So don’t be so quick to blame it on a crime. A lot more things can start a fire in a modern truck.
    RIP driver

I have had two trucks catch fire, but they were both running. One was while I was backed into a commodities barn at a dairy unloading ground hay off of a walking floor, it was also the starter solenoid.
The other time I was sitting in a Texas dot's care getting a ticket for not replacing my fire extinguisher I had used an a car a couple of days earlier. lol
