You can probably get a CDL. From what we've seen on the forum almost anybody can.
Where you'll run into problems is actually getting hired to drive a truck. Right now there are thousands of drivers, good experienced drivers, who are out of work because of the economy.
Employers have stacks of applications from the type of drivers they want to hire.
Someone like you, with all of your problems, and your idea that the job should adjust itself to your wants and needs, probably won't get more than a cursory glance before your application is round filed.
Too many red flags, mental problems, failure to accept responsibility for your position in life, unreasonable expectation and a complete lack of anything even resembling vocational achievement won't get you hired. Period.
I know this is harsh but it's time you gave some thought to another career.
I wouldn't hire you. I don't know anyone who would.
I hope things get better for you but trucking, for you as you are, isn't a good pathLonesome, Sons Hero, bryan21384 and 3 others Thank this. -

I suppose I need to just focus on saving as much as i can "just in case" and continue my current van life for the time being like others suggested, and worry only if things actually start to crumble. I do suspect it will in the following few months, but hopefully not.... -
I had to google misanthropic introvert. It doesn’t sound like anything to serious. You like being along and feel most comfortable when alone. Sound like normal truck driver. Not sure why you on SSA or disability if you just enjoy being by yourself. I think a lot of kids can get messed up in schools and at home because nobody wants to say what is really going wrong. Boys are raised to not show feelings or emotions because it a sign of weakness. If a boy gets bullied at school the parents generally don’t help and the teachers or schools don’t. You’re kinda left to defend for yourself. It’s like the only time you get some peace and quiet and not having to defend yourself is when you’re alone. So being alone becomes a good feeling and is relaxing and enjoyable.
I wouldn’t get off SS disability because it might be difficult to get back on it again. The stuff they are looking for is fraud with big numbers I don’t think you would be cut off anytime soon and probably never.
Truck driver can be fun when you out all alone just driving and relaxing alone. It can be stressful when driving in traffic or you got to make that appointment and you are still waiting to get loaded. Looking for a place to park at night can be very stressful when their is no parking available at truck stop and you are running out of hours to drive.
I would look for the free training by a trucking company that will also hire you if you did give it a shot. Because if they think is not good to hire you they won’t. If they sent you their driver class then they will see you each step of they way. First you pass the written test. Then you get backing practice and city driving experience. If you get through that you go with a trainer and ride and work together 24 hours a day for 4-6 weeks. That a big test for anyone that enjoys being alone because you have almost no privacy. If you make it all they way you got a job driving their truck all alone by yourself and the radio and the crazy people on the roads. -
@BenWolf --
In addition to the above....some other points to ponder:
- As has already been discussed -- the CDL job market is now arguably the worst I've seen since I started out in it. Even experienced drivers with good safety records are sitting on the sidelines right now. It's not impossible for you to get in -- but expect that first job hunt to be a LONG, TOUGH SLOG.
- I was also a caregiver for a parent for a while before getting a CDL. MAKE SURE YOU ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF THE CAREGIVER BUSINESS before you chase after a CDL. That job will not afford you time for both.
- Surviving your first year as a new CDL driver (& beyond) requires a certain mental toughness. It's easy to see why many carriers really like to hire military veterans: because (in part) of their training...they have the drive, the discipline, the resourcefulness & the mental/physical stamina to see things through to a successful conclusion. To make in the transportation business -- you will need to offer very much of the same.
- You don't say where you are located. If we knew of a working zip code -- some could make suggestions here on where to possibly start. With that said -- the above suggestion by "Brandt" is a good one.

The alternative to trying entirely by myself would be going through Ticket To Work, where the state vocational office helps you get hired somewhere; aka a DEI hire. I know that wouldn't get me into trucking, most likely, but maybe it would find me something that isn't retail or hard labor. But that's assuming funding will even be there, after the 60 year old databases get wrecked, like they seem to be trying to do, rushing a 5 year to implement IT project into 2 months, while the current SSA head appointed by T has openly admitted that DOGE is going to "break things". His words, not mine.
