What the hell school wants to train someone to start in 4th gear?? That's rough on the clutch no matter if you're empty/loaded and a student with no experience has enough trouble coming out of 2nd gear. Almost sounds like some sort of setup to fail to get extra $ out of you somehow

I want you to start off in 1st #### it.
If you are learning, you work the gears. If your instructors are too lazy to absorb the shocks, bucking etc of students learning they should GTFO.SESteve83, Crusader66, G13Tomcat and 2 others Thank this. -

I start off my bobtail in LO gear. I think they want you to take off in 4th is to limit shifting. Starting off in 4th will shudder the trans and drive line too much. Might as well drive an automatic as take off in 4th gear. I think the instructors are afraid the student driver will miss a gear but have created a problem of stalling out by starting off in too high a gear.
x1Heavy, Crusader66 and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
I wouldn't use the clutch and a gear to hold it.. I use the brake pedal.. works everytime. rolling backwards is usually an automatic fail on a road test
x1Heavy Thanks this. -

that will fail you.
Also for safety, always use your brake to hold from rolling back. This is not your fast & furious Honda civic...this is an 80K lbs killing machinestr8t10, x1Heavy, G13Tomcat and 1 other person Thank this.
