And it is possible to get a non-union job even if you were union. I know plenty of people who have. Just gotta tell them what they want to hear

Sad to say but that ultimately is the key to success

I am gonna go ahead and chime in since I work under the YRC/USF umbrella.
You got a couple of scenarios that explain why a posting by a carrier stays up for an extended period of time:
1. The carrier is anticipating a FUTURE loss or gain of employees (either people retiring before the winter hits, or expecting much more freight in the spring time. Either way, an employer will keep up a posting well in advance for the sake of collecting resumes to get a good idea of what their available workforce pool will look like. This way they can filter out the undesirables and not have to worry about hiring someone on short notice.
2. The carrier is experiencing a higher than normal turnover for that specific terminal. Sadly we have two vacant P&D driver positions that have been filled at least 5 times over the past four months. Exceptionally poor management and treatment of employees will be enough to keep these spots open. Not gonna comment on this one any further.
Yeah, and maybe cause that terminal is union or whatever and you have to be part of the union to work there; but I highly doubt it. Most of USF and a good chunk of YRC is non-union. We pretty much hire most anyone to be honest... but I've been wrong before, so who knows. -
If you are talking about the Holland Terminal (no longer USF) on Clyde Park, they are Union, and I know a couple months ago they were still looking for more drivers as they were busy, same thing with the YRC terminal off of Chicago Drive. I know a couple of the high up people there.
I know Dayton freight on Clyde Park just north of 84th st. has been advertising for driver positions for a couple months now as well, they are non union where both YRC and Holland are UnionWingnut1 Thanks this. -

So how does this work with being union/non-union? What is the difference between a closed union shop and a non-union shop? I understand that the terminal in question is union... does that mean the employer there can only hire union guys? What if they can't find a union driver, can they still hire a non-union driver?

What they meant was that they say ex-union guys have a hard time getting a non-union gig. They say they are afraid that they will try to bring thevunion in. I know plenty of ex -union who went non no problem. All you gotta do is know how to talk in your interview and tell them what they want to hear.
Ok i think we should stop hyjacking this thread now before we get in trouble. -

USF Holland is a beast of a company in the regionals of making money. At one point UPSF tried to buy them. All Holland is union, haven't heard any knock on working for them. Only bad is they are owned by a struggling YRC, USF regionals profit 23 mil this quarter.

Well, I transferred my license back up here and got hazmat back on. Filled out the app online last night and got a call this afternoon. Guess it won't hurt to go in and chat with them.
One of my old employers was in a jam, so I'm helping them get caught back up for the time being.
