I was just wondering if maybe I needed to look out for that in the future.I lit my rears up pretty good stopping
for that guy.He had flashers going up,and down hill, then decided he wanted to slow waaaay down at the
bottom of our biggest hill.We almost became room mates.

i'm surprised that dude is trucking. i would think a cop or scale would put him out of service with a bad suspension.

My Swift mentor said it was illegal to flash the 4 ways on California STAA routes.
He would get on the CB and tell other truckers to turn off their 4 ways as well.
He also said Oregon wants to raise the speed limit to 65 on the interstates but the state cannot afford to change all the 55 signs to 65.
Something about Swift driver hmmm. -
''LOL,there isn't a hill in Cali, (at least on the NN that my trucks can't climb at the speed limit loaded to our reg. weight, that is IF everybody else is outta our way!

A lot of people confuse the requirement for a warning flasher and use of 4 way flashers. In CA a warning flasher is used for emergency vehicles. You can check the CA drivers handbook http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/cdl_htm/sec2.htm and see you can use your 4 ways when going slower than traffic. The quote above was taken from Chapter 7 of Division 12. Division 12 speaks only for emergency vehicles such as a tow truck. It does not include cars or trucks.skellr Thanks this. -
Personally, I would go for what's safer, if technically illegal, both re flasher use and jakes. I rather think the four wheel jockeys around me would rather know I'm going much slower than them uphill, and that I have cool, ready to use brakes coming down a big grade (esp when I'm loaded to 105k and change).
Lilbit and scottied67 Thank this. -
Ive been hearing this for years. The guys who told me they got tickets all told me appx the same amount, so I figured there must be something to it. My Co. drives a lot in CA and we had a big discussion on FB about it and the consensus was dont use flashers. Last week I went in to Donner scales for a safety check and went in and asked the Sr. officer. He said that in 25 yrs, he'd never heard of such a rule and was pretty sure it wasnt on the books. BUT... He said that some officers might take things into their own hands... I dont use my flashers in CA. The reason I've always heard was they dont want 4 wheelers in the habit of following flashers during whiteouts. I once had a retarded dog who chased parked cars, so with 4 wheelers, anythings possible...

Regardless of what that DOT Officer told you, at one time, there was a section in California Vehicle Code that prohibited the use of " four way flashers" while a vehicle was in motion. I cannot site the section, as it has apparently been removed, but I was in LE for over 20 years there, and that section was enforced at that time. (I retired from LE in '97.)
Lilbit Thanks this. -
I know this to be correct from all my years running Cali--funny thing is I personally never saw it enforced--and I did follow it--(although reluctantly)until '86 or so (fuzzy memory)whenever the nat'l 55 was lifted and Cali went to the 70/55(actually I think it started 65/55 then went up)once the speed differential was that much greater--I started using them anytime under 50--and no one said a word--just think it is a safety thing--especially on some of the urban congested areas--with some good size pulls--and there are always a few 4 wheelers flyin from lane to lane tryin to get around!
Just my $.02! -
I was informed by the safety guy at work that running flashers on the hills are not legal..But i do it..Nothing like my company's rolling obstructions climbing donner summit at 20 mph and seeing the cars realizing im going super slow and swerve at the last minute.
CHP officers just roll on by.
