The companies are making millions simply by volume. Schneider, Werner, Swift, and JB Hunt are making a killing simply because they dominate so much of the market. I promise you the average rookie truck driver is not generating huge revenue for those companies. You state you are a veteran driver trying to get back into the industry, so you know this as well as I do. The average rookie has accidents at at least twice the rate of veterans; damages clutches, driveshafts, transmission, engines, etc; hasn't learned the tricks to get fuel mileage; is not yet good at trip planning or time management; costs the carrier far more in HOS violations, overweight fines, and equipment violations than the veteran; etc. It all adds up. I sat and talked about this very thing one time with a member of midlevel management that no longer works for USA. He told me that rookies are used to move the less critical loads, especially those that aren't time sensitive. It keeps the carrier from suffering rate penalties from brokers and customers that demand time sensitive pickups and deliveries. He also told me that this is one of the reasons that many don't get the miles they think they should be getting because they haven't validated that they can be trusted to operate without stiff supervision.

As far as the kickbacks go....I don't think its what you think they are. Companies get tax breaks by employing people, its not just being handed cash. There are also stipulations in that the person must remain employed for certain lengths of time to qualify for it. With the turnover rate being what it is, I just don't think its as profitable as you believe. It also forces the carrier to try their best to keep the student employed if they want the tax break but honestly, if a carrier is depending upon a tax break just to stay afloat, thats not good business policy. Sounds like Solyndra to me.

Chem well put, sounds like you are a company man, maybe mid-management, almost sounds like you are a not a driver at all, but who am I to say that is just my opinioin. Good luck be safe. Oh by the way it is about time the board of directors demoted Cliff, should have been done after 4 quarters of losses !!!! not 8 or more!!!

OK well at the risk of being shunned there are some things that the experience guys are not saying. And yes i am a "Newbie" I got my CDL in sept. 2012 and started with USA. I get loads of miles i average between 2,500 to 3000 miles a week. I get several time sensative loads. I also time my running well and am running for 7 days and not having to do 34 hour restarts. In the intrest of being fair I also have to say that 90% of the time your miles and how you get treated comes down to the crap shoot of who your DM is (They just changed the title from fleet mgr to Driver mgr). From my Experiances with USA there are some things that can improve but there are things that are way better then the other starters like PAM. First is pay USA starts out at .18 CPM running team (no option you have to for 6 months ) and when they get to single driver it is .26 CPM then after 6 months they hit .29 CPM we start at .28 CPM then after 60 days you get .29 CPM. it is all in thier paper work. and they have a very compensating pay structure that most drivers don't know about and then don't ask for it. at all the terminalss they have the paper work put out there just grab a copy and then when you "Break Down" you will get paid. Get a load on Friday that dose not deliver until Monday ??
they have weekend pay. and delay pay. so this company is fair about things. If i had any complaint about the company it would be it is hard to get your home time. If you stand up for yourself you get it. So their are worse things out there but USA as a starter is not by far the worst out there. Also all of these things are verifyable and just send me an email and i can show you my proof.

Did you say USA pays delay? Only if they get paid delay will you get paid. Which is rare. I've never been paid for having to sit and wait. Never. Who was paid .18 for team split? That's terrible. I've teamed alllot. Ten years ago we were getting in the forties split.

They tell you that detention pay exists.....but the catch is (drumroll lol!)......its different for every customer! You have to ask your FM on each occasion that you feel its warranted. I've found this out the hard way. Whatever freight agreement they have with a customer determines when detention pay starts or stops. Technically.....your FM could also hold you to the policy of having your bills time stamped by you or the shipper/receiver upon arrival and departure. I know I will get argument on that one but I actually read that in an article that was authored by Cliff himself in that driver newsletter they used to put out. Many drivers (myself included) aren't going to want to get into a peeing match with one of the fat ladies behind the glass over writing in times and initials on bills. Its just not worth the hastle. It can turn ugly really fast. If you are an independent O/O you can afford to do that sort of thing. Being a company driver, its not good policy to pop the thermometer with customers.

Now on the flip side, I have had my FM pay me "layover pay" when I had to sit over a weekend with no load or load plan. It was actually on my pay stub as $150 layover pay.

No I am actually a company driver. I wish that I did work in management here sometimes. I have multiple ideas that could stop some of the flow of money going out the door. Unfortunately it seems that to work in the palace, you either have to be related to somebody, a Razorback alumno, or a really hot female. I'm sadly none of the above. Additionally, although I wouldn't mind at all relocating my home of record to Fort Smith, it would seriously impact my ability to have a role in my son's life. So for now its just not in the cards.

I'm sure your ideas would be a great help. The sad thing is they would just Stonewall you. The corporate world isn't a pretty picture either. All the Backstabbing going on.

My husband drove for USA Truck. They are not a bad company for drivers just starting out. But for the drivers who have experience, not so much. My hubby has nearly 20 yrs experience. He didnt get the miles with them. He was always stuck on the east coast. He kept after them about it but still didnt get the miles. They would get him off the east coast for a lil while then right back he went. As far west he would go would be arizona. The time he was with them, he had like 4 or 5 fm. And on top of that, they screwed him over on his home time. He wanted Christmas off. He stayed out no less then 4 months at a time. And only asked for 3 days off and having Christmas off. Yeah right. He got the 3 days off, but when Christmas rolled around, he got home late that evening. He wanted the day before, the day of and the day after Christmas. He got home the evening of Christmas. The very next day, they called him asking if he would go back out. Naturally, he told them no because he didnt get home until the evening before. With him gripping (in a nice way to start off with) about gettin short miles, he started gettin ticked, before i know it, he gets a load jus south of Denton, TX, they gave him another short run. which was a mistake on their part, he went up to the TA truckstop around that area, cleaned out the truck, called his son, and ex sister n law to come have them come pick him up, and cleaned out the truck. What i mean about a mistake on their part is that we live about an hr or so from the Denton shop. He told them he quit. Thats the last we heard from them.

In my years with USA the one thing I do know is they will do everything possible to get everyone home for Christmas that wants to be there. I myself have been deadheaded 350 Miles one year just so I could be home. I've talked to many other drivers and have heard the same thing over and over again. They may not do so good any other time but they do go out of the way for Christmas.
